The last person to play football and cricket for England was Arthur Milton (Gloucestershire and Arsenal). Last test 1959, only football international 1951. Denis Compton actually never played a full international at football - all his England matches were wartime internationals for which full caps were not awarded. Fair enough, but I do think that Monty Panasar should be the next, he could play alongside Rooney in SA next year

My first reaction was "that bloke from the west country" but couldn't think of his name so I just picked 3 out and was wrong each time

That was my era Billy, as a child waiting patiently ( : for my friend's dad to get off the train from London with Friday's Evening News, listing the squads for every team playing in London that weekend. We could have named an eleven for each of the 92 clubs then without pausing for breath, these days I'm not sure I could name an eleven for more than half a dozen Premiership clubs. I just wasn't sure whether anyone had done it since Baldwin.

I could name teams from decades ago but would struggle with one from this year. There are so many players rotating now that's it's all got a bit silly.

Helped us win a few quizzes though Mark, didn't it ? I could still name most cup winners since 1872 until about 1980 but after that I'd be hopeless.
