Hot on the heels of that very special night last May when the entire starting line-up for the FA Cup tie with Coventry in Jan 1989 turned up to play in a charity match at GGL to mark twenty years passing since that unbelievable day; today the club marked the occasion of forty years passing since Sutton's FA Cup 4th Rd tie in Jan 1970 with Leeds United, the strongest team in the land at the time.
In much the same way as I thoroughly enjoyed chatting to the heroes of 1989 after the game last May, so did I again today with the immensely nice set of guys who took to the field against Leeds all those years ago.
What struck me most - as was the case with the legends of '89 back in May - was how pleased those ex-players were to have been invited to be a part of today and what the club obviously meant to them. 8 of that 1970 squad were there today and those who couldn't make it passed on their best wishes and regrets for not being able to be there in person.
Another great great occasion and yet more evidence just what a very special club Sutton United is. A club to be very proud of.
Well done to all concerned.

I enjoyed this aspect of the aftenoon far more than the 2-1 win.
It was fantastic to be able to mingle with them and chat. John Faulkner had alot of good stuff to say about Don Revie and how he was a players' manager and looked after them all. He also said that had Larry been a little younger, Revie would have signed him too!
Peter Drabwell was wearing his Sutton tie from back then too. 42 years old that tie, I just think that it was great that he knew where it was!
Ted Powell's wife Susan even remebered that Ted had brought me back some souvenirs when he played for England in West Germany. Brilliant.
For me it brought back the memories of my earliest days off watching the U's.
I would implore you all to buy a copy of the book. It is an absolute bargain for a fiver.
As AB says, well done to all for putting the event together.

I was going on to say ...To commemorate the anniversary the book which has been produced is an absolute "must buy". A great chronicle of football as it was in those days containing splendid articles which bring that historical fixture to life.

Great to see so many SUFC Legends at GGL today. To all those who helped in getting the book published well done and what terrific value for a fiver!

Brilliant to talk to the the class of 1970 and that's just what they are still - class. Well done to all those who organised the event...... Was there, got the book, just waiting for the Tshirt.

Managed to sneak into the VP's afterwards & get a few of the guys to scribble in my copy and snatched a quick chat with a couple. Really nice to see so many of the side make it down for the day. Only had chance to flick through the book so far, but for a fiver, you can't really argue!

Big feature on the book and reunion on page 2 of today's NLP, let's hope it prompts a sell-out !

Picking up on AB's comments, what struck me about talking to all of the players - individually or in groups - is yes, they are nice guys, but they are also amazingly modest. If you give someone a compliment, it's usually met along the lines of "but I had so many good players around me". Dave Roffey couldn't be there yesterday, but when I spoke to him he was just genuinely surprised, and pleased, that anyone should remember the game. It reminds me of Barrie Williams' comment about the Coventry side, that they were all "proper chaps". We are so lucky at this club to have had several groups of players that were all "proper chaps" and who we are lucky to regard as friends. Oh, and they could play a bit as well :-)
