They should scrap it , then you'd see who can play football. It was brought in in the thirties because too many goals were being scored , that hardly applies nowadays .

Would have thought that it would promote the long ball game. Another piece of blatter blarney?

I am curious to see a match without the OS rule, would it even work? I mean what would happen to the midfield and would you just have 2 sets of players camped in the areas? Oh! I don't remember the 30's so not much to go there I am afraid

The proposal as I understand it is to scrap offside except in the penalty areas. Supposedly like hockey (not that I know how that works). If there were no offside at all, you would just get teams pumping the ball up to the goal area for their big centre forwards all the time. Would totally ruin the game. Bit like that trial we had of kick-ins instead of throw-ins, where there was no offside and everyone just hoofed it into the box.
Having said that, something needs to be done about simplifying the current offside law, with all this stuff about active and non-active and phases etc., which hardly anyone really understands.

You could see a more open game of football with more goals being scored and wouldn't be able to push all your defenders up to the half way line.I'd like to see a trial though first.

What is the point , as it stands now , of players being flagged up for being offside by a matter of inches when they are forty yards from goal ? It's ludicrous.

I hope they don't scrap it. Do you remember the season in the Conf when they inroduced the "no offside from free kicks" rule. Any free kick from 10 yards inside your own half was booted downfield into a melee of players packed into the goal mouth. It might have led to more goals (I can't remember) but it didn't lead to more football!

Couple of other sides worked out the same tactic and got similar results. The experiment was dropped very quickly after that! Sort of thing that would be amusing for a couple of games, but would get very old very quickly. Kick ins? Urgh. I've only just finished therapy for the game we had at Grays that year. *shudder*

It would be terrible to see seven or eight goals in one match.A nil nil or one nil is always so much better.

Er, so the game has been crap for the past 70 years then has it Billy? Football is not just about scoring goals, it is also about preventing them. As I said above, removing the o/s law would turn the game into a long ball affair & remove the passing game we all prefer to watch.
I suppose though, you'd have something else to moan about.

Okay - I get the possible sarcasm but come on guys. Billy wants to see goals. He doesn't need people jumping down his throat every time he makes a comment.
For what it's worth, I would not want to see a no off side rule. What I would like is a change whereby there is a line accross the pitch about 30 yards from the goal line where the offside rule comes into effect. To me it would open play up more but still give defenders the offside option nearer goal where it is more relevant.
