come on lads you are all getting too serious, its commemts from Billy that keep this board alive. Of course we want to see more goals, so how about increasing the size of the goal itself. I am sure someone can tell me when size of the goal was set, but time have moved on goalkeepers on average are bigger and the ball lighter. I would like to see the so called stars of today play with old leather ball when it soaking wet!!!
Keep it going Billy....

TBH, if a game finishes 0-0 but both sides have had a go and tried to play, I've got no problem. I've seen a couple of cracking 0-0 draws before.
My point was, scrapping offside would just lead to chaos. And I'm really not sure I could deal with the implosion of the media in this country if the likes of Stoke were top of the Premier League! ;D
The law needs simplifying. The revisions made by FIFA in the last few years have only served to confused the feck out of many people.
As for Blatter, the man is an utter idiot.

Football would become a totally different game without the offside rule. Teams wouldn't be able to hold a defensive shape and matches would be like a game of tennis, with the ball lumped from one end to the other.
However, the current ruling about players being "active" or "inactive" is rubbish, imho. I think Brian Clough put it rather succinctly - "If a player's not interfering with play, what's he doing on the pitch?"
If you're in an offside position, you're offside. Absolutely simple. Everyone knows where they stand.
As an aside, I sometimes think how interesting it'd be to see today's players play a game with the original rules of football. So no substitutions, backpasses allowed, red cards a rarity, goalkeepers can hold onto the ball for as long as they like...
... not saying that I think changes to any of these rules are bad, btw. I just think it'd be interesting to see how the game's changed.

Many years ago a 0 - 0 draw meant that both goalkeepers had made loads of good saves , and the woodwork had probably been rattled a few times.
Nowadays it often means that neither team has had one single attempt on goal in the whole game.
Stopping the game and awarding a freekick to the defenders because someone is six inches offside three yards over the halfway line and miles away from goal does not help matters.
Still , it's only forty quid to get in !
By the way , i always thought it was Shankly who made the not interfering with play comment.

They would still have the offside rule, but at least it'd be free. Looks like we were both wrong about the second point - Bill Nick apparently. www.guardian.co.uk/football/2004/feb/18/theknowledge.sport

Here is a couple more things to make football more 'exciting'. Count the clock down to 0 instead of up to 90+ Penalty shoot out whenever there is a draw.
Oh wait, thats the North American Soccer League rules of the 1970s. Someone tell Blatter the Yanks already did the 'no offside' and it will all go away quickly enough.

Nope, it was Brian Clough as Burtie said.
Personally, I don't think there is much wrong with the laws of the game it is just some of those that enforce them on a matchday and unscrupulous players trying to get away with anything they can. I would hasten to add regarding the latter, it is fortunately less prevalent at the level we follow.

Brian Clough must have copied it then as I am sure he said it too.
