Sutton United boss Paul Doswell insists there is more pressure on the Ryman League Premier Division’s big spenders than his so-called title favourites.
The Gander Green Lane chief has overhauled his squad - with eight new faces this summer - as he bids to better the play-off semi-final defeats of the last two seasons.
Prolific striker Richard Jolly heads the list of proven performers to switch to United this summer as the former Eastleigh manager goes all out for promotion this time around.
But Croydon Athletic, Tooting & Mitcham, Tonbridge Angels, Carshalton Athletic and Kingstonian have not exactly been dormant in the transfer market ahead of the big kick-off this weekend.
Doswell, who starts his third season at the helm on Saturday, insists his playing budget has not changed since he took charge And says it is other managers who should be more concerned if their investment turns sour.
“I’m fed up with people saying we’ve been spending a lot of money this summer and that makes us title favourites, ” he said.
“My budget has not changed since I took over and we stick strictly to it.
“I laugh when I see comments from Croydon saying they are only spending what money they generate and then see them sign the likes of Jermaine Wright, Tom Hutchinson and Ben Judge.
“I can’t see how their crowds can sustain the sort of money they must be spending.
“Then you look at the players Tooting have brought in and wonder what is going on there if they have supposedly slashed their budget.
“I think it is wide open this year. Nevermind the pressure supposedly on us. I think there is pressure everywhere else. This club won’t change if we don’t go up.”
Two goals from new boy Fola Orilonishe saw United round off their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win over Met Police on Saturday.
And Doswell says his men couldn’t be better prepared.
“’I think I’d be happier than to just describe our pre-season as satisfactory,” he added.
“We’ve been working now for six weeks and we’re ready for it.
“The players have been excellent, they’ve worked very well and hard, and we’re raring for it to start.”
