Hi Sutton fans, With the first game of the season just a day away, we've taken the opportunity to speak to Bruce Elliott about a few things. We've also got a separate story on how Sutton propose to prolong the life of the pitch this season. Both stories are in the Sutton Advertiser, out today, and if you can't get a copy, they are also online in our Sutton United section, here: www.sportcroydon.co.uk/suttonunitedAdvertiser Sport

Bruce could not choose between promotion or the 3rd round of the FA cup It has to be the 3rd round .............if it were a choice.

Promotion for me, the 3rd round would be great but it doesn't mean we would get a big draw which is key.
I would take 3rd round with a big draw and TV, but that is because it would earn us enough to push on or do something a bit special at the ground (a new pitch maybe).
However promotion would be awesome.

I'd go for both and hope that the weather doesn't postpone many matches. With the squad we have, and if we stay injury free, we CAN do both!

How many points would people estimate our cup run cost us last season? 4 qualifiers and the 1st rd itself. 4 more games than there might have been. Extra fatigue and indirectly more injuries, leading to a weaker squad. Does the distraction of the FA Cup end up costing a team 2 or 3 wins over the 42. Last year we were 2nd in the league and altho we were some way behind Dartford, at one point we were in (very slight) danger of catching them. A better start to the season and no cup heroics would not be so bad if it meant more points in the bank....promotion wins it for me.

Losing 4 matches from our first 7 is what costs us the title, rather than any FA cup run. The 2nd 45 mins against Kingstonian is what stopped us getting promotion. Neither of those was connected with an extended cup run. Actually although it wasnt ideal and in combination with poor weather, when the chips were down in the 2nd half of the season with a fixture pile up, our return was of title winning standard.
I agree that it can sometimes have a negative effect, and I remember after the Coventry game, apart from beating Weymouth in a paddyfield it took until March before we started performing well again. And the 3 times we've been relegated, we had truncated cup runs so that didn't contribute to that too. Yes, a cup run can have an impact, but no more so as a series of unlucky injuries, weather interrupted games, and playing teams who are in form (Like when we played Weston in our relegation season - after they played us they became rubbish but early in the season they were on form)

The one thing that put paid to promotion last season was the second half against Kingstonian. We would have been hard pushed to catch Dartford, and finishing second in any other league would be automatic promotion, but sod's law it means play-offs.

How many non league sides get to the third round each year? Getting there could set up the club financially for many years to come - even if we played lower league sides!

Promotion all the way for me without question. Simple fact is, to get to the 3rd round you're putting 7 games minimum onto your schedule. That's seven saturdays gone. And then you've got to factor in Trophy ties, postponed matches and any replays.
IMO, a side of our stature couldn't possibly make FAC 3rd round AND win the league. We just don't have the playing resources.
