Woods-Garness form gives Sutton selection headache
By Stuart Amos »
Table topping Sutton United boss Paul Doswell says the form of Bradley Woods-Garness has given him a headache only a month into the new campaign.
The former Farnborough man hit what proved to be the winner in Tuesday’s 3-2 win at Hastings and scored the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Billericay Town at Gander Green Lane.
It means he has three goals to his name already this season - despite playing in a wide role thus far - as United have won five of their first six games to be unbeaten at the Ryman League Premier Division summit.
Doswell, whose team is three points clear of second-place Hendon, admits it has put pressure on front men Richard Jolly, Steve Watts and Craig Dundas.
And he may be considering his striking options when the league campaign re-commences at Harrow Borough later this month.
“Playing out wide is not his favoured position, but he has gone and got another important goal for us,” he said.
“At the moment it has been difficult to get him in up top, but you can’t ignore the way he is playing.
“He has had a very good start to the season and moving him through the middle is definitely something I’m going to be looking at doing.”
Sutton equalled their best over sequence of consecutive cleansheets - set more than 70 years ago - with Saturday’s win over Billericay in front of more than 700 fans.
Goals from Tom Davis, Jolly and Woods-Garness gave United a 3-0 lead on Tuesday before Hastings fought back and even had an equaliser disallowed deep in injury time.
“I have to take responsibility for the way we almost lost it,” added Doswell.
“I got the message out for us to hold on to what we had when Dundas went off and it meant they really went at us.
“Tactically we got it wrong. There are plenty of times when I’ve got it right, but I’ve got to learn the lesson from that one.”Simon Downer (hamstring), Alan Bray (knee), Kenny Adjei (knee), Dundas (ankle), Fola Orilonishe (knee) and Davis (ankle) are nursing injuries.
So the Gander Green Lane chief believes it is case of fielding who is fit for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Alton Town.
“We’ve got a good break after the weekend to get people right, so it is not a case of resting players,” he said.
“Financially this competition is very important to us and we need to get through.”
Sutton’s next three games: Sept 11 Alton Town (FAC, h), 21 Harrow Borough (h), Oct 2 Margate (h).
