On Saturday it's Sutton's eagerly awaited away trip to Bury Town. It's worth getting to Bury St Edmunds early and having a wander around this historic market town (good excuse for a pub crawl!) as it has lots to admire - quaint old streets, medieval churches, abbey ruins etc. (I'm aiming for the 9.44 from Kings X, changing at Cambridge to arrive at 11.23.
The town is also home to Greene King, one of the UK's biggest brewers of real ale. Although some ale aficionados are rather sniffy about GK's products, there are other beery delights to be found in the town's hostelries. I set out below a selection of the better pubs.
Dove (68 Hospital Rd, IP33 3JU)
Probably the best selection of ales in town, many from smaller East Anglian breweries. No distractions such as food, TV or games machines. On the SW side of town, about 20 minutes' walk from the station and football ground.
Nutshell (The Traverse, IP33 1BJ)
OK, it's Greene King - but worth visiting as it's claimed to be the smallest pub in Britain (though there are other candidates). Just big enough to hold Histon's away support. In the town centre, it's also on CAMRA's national inventory of historic pub interiors.
Old Cannon Brewery (86 Cannon St, IP33 1JR)
Brew-pub, about half-way between the station and football ground. Look out for the Gunner's Daughter at 5.5%! Noted for food.
Rose & Crown (48 Whiting St, IP33 1NP)
If you're going to drink Greene King anywhere it might as well be here, as it's reckoned to be the best in town. A traditional pub, a stone's throw from the brewery. Good value lunches.
