Sutton still strong despite defeat
By Stuart Amos »
Sutton United boss Paul Doswell reckons his men still have one hand on the Ryman Premier League title, despite a 2-1 defeat at Wealdstone on Saturday.
The hosts scored an injury-time winner after in-form frontman Richard Jolly had seemingly secured a point for Doswell’s men having flicked in Craig Dundas’ second-half effort.
Sutton are nine points clear of nearest rivals Bury Town - who have two games in hand - but more importantly are only 17 points adrift of the 84 point target the Gander Green Lane chief believes will be enough to lift the crown.
“I would never swap our position for anybody else’s,” he said.
“You want to win every game. We will lose games, but so will everybody else.
“It is going to go right down to the last couple of games. This is the nervous period and it is only going to get worse as it goes down to the wire.
“Everybody else is going to have to win eight or nine of their last ten games and this isn’t the sort of league where that is going to happen.”
Jolly scored his third goal since returning from a loan spell at Wealdstone and is now two goals clear at the top of the Premier League scoring charts with 19.
“Craig did all the work, but people said that Richard’s touch meant their keeper couldn’t get to it, so like any good striker he is claiming it,” added Doswell.
“He wouldn’t claim something he didn’t mean. It is immaterial because we lost the game, but it is good he kept up his scoring form.”
The defeat was only Sutton’s second in their last nine games and Doswell, who expects to have a fully fit squad available for selection this weekend, remained philosophical about the result.
“I will always try and win a game, but it wasn’t a case of going for it in a kamikaze fashion,” he said.
“I was really pleased with the way we played. It felt like we lost a point rather than three because we were never going to get more than a draw.
“We totally did them at our place with two late goals so I suppose it was a bit of karma that they won.”
Sutton’s next three games: Mar 12 Hendon (h), 19 AFC Hornchurch (a), 26 Canvey Island (h).

It all depends how much we want this title, everyone should be chomping at the bit to get at Hendon and put them away. We have dreamt of being in this position and we ain't gonna balls it up now

We're at the stage now where every win is a big step towards the title, but if we go two games without a win then we're putting ourselves under pressure. So, after last Saturday's reverse at Wealdstone, the Hendon game becomes an important match.
There's already been speculation on a certain other forum that our end-of-season slump has started. Let's prove 'em wrong!

We are top of the league for a reason. It's not luck (although we may have occasionally have been lucky, but also in other examples unlucky), it because that over the course of 7 months, we have the best side in the league. Which we still have. Kev, Kes, Pagey, Downer, Davis, Dundo, BWG, Kenny, Fola, Jolly have been with us since the start, and we've enhanced our squad with Forbes, Leroy, Ebs, Tommy Kav and Muzza. Possibly our two biggest losses to the squad were our Captain Marvel and AJ. And those stepping in for them have done a great job, and occasionally better.
We're still the same team that got us to where we are now. There's no reason to think we can't get the job done. We can do this.

and we've enhanced our squad with Forbes, Leroy, Ebs, Tommy Kav and Muzza. Erm....Heinzy has been with us for several years now?!!! Yes, but he's only started playing a bigger role in the first team since October - he didn't play in our opening league games of the season, first came on as a sub in late Sept and didn't start or play a full game until Maidstone away in November. At the start of the season, in terms of youth/reserves breaking through, Andre Costa was higher up the pecking order. So although yes he's 'been' here for a while, he's 'enhanced' the original squad that Dos set out. And well done to him, he's rising to the challenge!

Every game is cup-finalesque and Saturday is perhaps the biggest game of the season. Hendon are down amongst the relegation fighters, and this is a major game for them as well, and after their win over us last month they may have some degree of confidence in playing us. But as Andy says, we are top for a reason, and I feel we have enough to take the 3 points tomorrow.
BTW I have a friend who's at Hendon at the moment, so I'm looking forward to some heavy duty mocking............

If we are to have any chance of winning tomorrow, I will have to stay away from the bookies.
I am rubbish at football betting.
Perhaps I could place a large wager on Hendon to win and scupper any chance they have!
