We were frankly shocking in the first ten minutes, and could easily have been more than 1-0 down. We gradually clawed our way back into the game, and Jason Henry had a header scrambled clear off the far post following a corner, but Weston continued to create the better chances and Hopkins got his second just before half-time when Phil rushed off his line only to see the ball rolled past him into the net.
We had some pressure in the second half, particularly after Nicky Greene came on, and the Weston defence looked more vulnerable once their captain Craig Rand had limped off. But we got caught by a counter-attack, Alan Bray failing to cut out the danger, and their sub Lee Smith got the third.
Weston looked a better side than last season, but losing 3-0 to them was still a poor result. We badly missed Matt Gray's ability to get in crosses. Unless IH strengthens the team soon, a season of struggle looks on the cards.

Was not there but stats say it all, 2 goals in 360mins joint lowest scorers in the league, say we need a striker. May not of won today but 6 goals against is mid table form if you score goals?
We really should have 6 points on the board St Albans were there for the taking and Bromley we throw away.

Honestly, you lot are worse than us!! You were so optimistic after your PSFs with some comments about playoffs and best ever season in Connie South. It does go to show that the PSFs are really not a good indicator of how you'll perform in competitive football.

Problem is Ratty, we played nobody of note in PSF's and people start thinking we are going to have a great season. I didn't go yesterday (only second CS match I've missed) but it appears I made a sound decision. We lost our right side of the midfield 4 in the summer & have not replaced it yet. That's always going to be difficult when one of them is Matt Gray.

A more significant aspect of the psf Mark, may be the injury that is keeping Bash out and the knocks sustained by AJ and Craig that mean they are not yet 100% fit or effective.

It was less who we played in pre-season, but how we played. There was a couple of examples of that passing game yesterday and we cut straight through WsM.
Mainly though it was very unintelligent punts on a damp skiddish surface that were mainly gobbled up by big defenders (like Basingstoke).
It was stupid football.

Maybe its just wishing thinking but I have seen some flashes of very good football from us so the potential is definitely there to my mind. The long ball tends to creep in because there is not a pass on because the movement is not good and if you don't get shot of the ball you get caught in possession. We don't have an out and out striker or goal poacher so CW or Warren have to be played in, the problem is if they are both wide there is no one in the middle to play in? You end with only scoring goals through set pieces or if someone creates one for themselves which is how we have scored our 2 goals. Although I think it could be masked to some degree with a striker I agree with MarkF that the fundamental problem is right side as it keeps CW from playing more centrally.
