In view of the distance involved to Cambridge, decided to see my nearest non league club, just 5 minutes walk, Bournemouth Poppies who play in the Wessex League. Premier Div. The game was 2nd Qualifying Round of FA Vase against Wootton Basset Town, who play in the Hellenic League Div 1. Result 12 - 0 to Poppies. Not only was the result satisfying, but the club received £600 for winning, on top of the £500 received for beating Abingdon Town in the previous round and the prospect of more cash in the next round should they win. This is big money for a club whose average gate is 60.
The point of all this brings me to Suttons game on Saturday in the FA cup, the winner collects £3750 with bigger rewards of£5000 in the next round, very useful money for any club. Please Sutton put your dreadful league form behind you and kickstart this season with a win against so called lower opposition, but beware there seems to be no easy games now.

The reason why games seem so difficult is that half the battle is believing that you can do it. A team that goes out there believing they will lose WILL lose. However, the flip side of this is that if you don't put in 100% against a lower placed team because you don't think you need to put in the effort, then you will be in trouble. Our opponents this week will certainly be putting in 100% and if Sutton don't match that then there could be trouble. That money would be rather nice, wouldn't it?

Agreed. SUFC know a little about smaller teams rising to the occasion.
We must send them to 'Coventry'!!

Has our win against Coventry given the opposition manager a platform for the team talk for the so called underdogs that we have played since? You can imagine the manager saying to his team this Saturday “Coventry came out of this dressing room and got beat by a team that no one gave a chance of winning, if we go out today and play like Sutton on that historic day did we will win!” Ok, not a Churchillian speech but I hope you get my point! Ian must also use that day to rally the side otherwise we could fail again. Saturday could be the pivotal point of our season, I think a win is more important than success in our next league game! I’m sure many will disagree………

I think you're spot on there Stewart. If we lose to Woodford it'll shatter what tiny amount of confidence there is left.

Totally agree as well. A decent cup run could help build the team's confidence. I just hope they have some when they go out on Saturday. Most of the teams we've lost to this season have not been highly placed in the league and some were frankly awful. However, when we played an unbeaten team, Eastleigh, they got out there and went about the business of winning. Even against Cambridge we looked like winning until we conceded and lost that confidence.

So you would all be happy if we beat Woodford in the cup and lose to unbeaten Eastborne and Weston in our next two league games and are still rooted too the bottom, add a further point of loads of previous teams who have gone on cup runs have ended up relegated due to the cup run, yest lets get a win,but it will mean nothing if we dont get anything from our next two league games.

But you obviously need to win one cup tie Rob to have a chance of winning in the next round, and so on. The income from a good FA Cup run has been sorely missed in recent years but, added to the efforts the commercial team is currently making, success this year would help finance strengthening of the team in the short and longer terms.
PS - congratulations to Bradley on his contract at Croydon Ath.

I don't think it will mean nothing. It will mean an extra 4 odd grand in the kitty for the club, which we really could do with at this point.

Talk about twisting words. My point was that a good Cup win might raise the morale of the team enough to spur them on to start winning league games. Of course we want that to happen.

Thanks Hon Sec for that Bradley is delighted and really enjoying his footie and the club are pl;eased with him ,so cheers.Yes the money obviously will be handy for Sutton,I appreciate that, and it will improve morale if we win,all I am saying is if we win lets not get carried away and take to the next league games and hopefully pick up some points,by the way has any of the money come through thre Nick Bailey sale.

The deal with Southend is that Barnet get their fee over two years, so that means it's the same for us - 24 payments. Yes. it's started to come in.
