For many of us Christmas comes bearing gifts, for others it’s hours and hours of endless of ‘shopping till you drop’ at the most exquisite shopping mall. For families as a group, it requires doing a spring cleaning all together which means a complete change to the television for the latest Samsung 32 inch flat screen advert you saw the other day on your way from work; changing both the sitting and dining hall furniture; swapping your good old Beko fridge for the must have technology advanced Eskimo fridge as well as other cooking utensils that need changing; a change in the clothes for the kids as they have out grown the wardrobes and need to shop for the winter and next year... please take a pause and reflect:
What if Christmas to someone somewhere in Lamin, Gambia is no different to any other day because they are poor and can’t afford a day’s treat for themselves? What if they don’t know what a shopping mall is because the most exquisite place they have shopped is the local “lumoo” [your version of a sunday market]? And as a family, they are perplexed with the concept of spring cleaning because you can’t clean up anything in an empty hall of a living room with just rugged wooden carvings as furniture? What if they don’t have a living room with only a giant jar molded from clay to cool drinking water for a fridge? What if family sizes are large and have few clothes and are required to share clothes the size of a small carton box for three kids of the same sex and age range?
I am imploring anyone reading this thread and seriously considering doing a “spring cleaning” for Christmas and the New Year, to please consider the many poor families and friends of Sutton United Football Club – Gambia and the numerous community projects the club works with in Lamin Village and its surroundings. Most of us here are very poor and families have nothing at all – no books to read, no toys or computers (laptops are a luxury only for the rich), no personal possessions, and many have no parents either.
ANYTHING... literally ANY possession – from personal accessories to house appliances - will be received with utmost gratitude, So please try and help by giving away some piece you won’t need from your house or closet to some individual or family who will jealously safe guard it with their life in Gambia!
Cheers
