Former Sutton player Phil Woosnam has passed away aged 80. Phil played as an amateur for the U's in the Athenian League and then with Leyton Orient before enjoying a professional career with West Ham and Aston Villa. He is perhaps best known as Commissioner of the North American Soccer League during the 1970s when players such as Pele, Bobby Moore and Rod Marsh were attracted to the States.

Thursday 8th July 1954Phil Woosnam, nephew of City legend Max Woosnam and cousin of golfer Ian Woosnam, leaves City and signs for Sutton United. In three years he played just once for the Blues and seemed to be drifting out of the game before re-igniting his career with West Ham and then Aston Villa. After he moved to America, Woosnam helped form the North American Soccer League as well managing the national team. www.mcfc.co.uk/home/news/on-this-day/july-2013/on-this-day-july-08-2013

Rodney Marsh was talking about Phil Woosnam on Talksport the other day I think. He was taking about when he went to America in the 70's.
