Sutton United's Binns puts his hand up to show the way forward
9:00am Friday 30th August 2013 in Sport By Tim Ashton
Come back kid: Dale Binns got his first action of the season in the 2-1 defeat to Bishop's Stortford at Gander Green Lane on Saturday
Sutton United midfielder Dale Binns is finally able to influence things on the pitch after injury robbed him of a starting place since day one of the Skrill South season.
The 32-year-old said he always wants to lead by example with high-energy performances, but it has proved difficult from the touchline while he nursed a groin injury.
Binns made his return off the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Bishop’s Stortford, and started in the 0-0 draw at Concord Rangers on Monday.
His own frustration has been mirrored on the pitch as United have picked up four points from a possible 12, but Binns is adamant the tide will turn in their favour.
He said: “I have to hold my hands up because I should have scored to win the Concord match, but we really competed and that is main reason we got a point.
“But we’re not got a settled team yet, and sometimes what we do in training has to change at the last minute.”
“Then we lost Jamie Slabber in the warm up to the game, and all of a sudden the things we’ve worked in training are out the window.”
This weekend, Sutton United host Whitehawk, who count former Crystal Palace and Millwall defender Matt Lawrence among their ranks.
The Hawks were promoted to the Skrill South as clear champions of the Ryman Division One South, but have just three points from four games so far this season.
Binns said: “As a squad, we have ability in abundance and maybe we’re a little guilty of thinking we just have to turn up to win a match.
“We can’t do that against Whitehawk, they are a good team although they have shipped goals.
“But we’re focused on our own game and this is a great chance to kick-start our season.
“Hopefully when Jamie [Slabber] gets back, the goals will start to flow for us and we can get going with a settled line-up.”
He added: “I was desperate to play against my old team Eastleigh when the injury hit. I was gutted to miss out and for a time I thought I could get through it and play.
“But then in the cold light of day, I realised it was better if I worked on getting fit, and now I am back and fully fit, I want to be out there on the pitch more and more.
“I always try to lead from the front and pump some enthusiam in the side when things are getting slow, and it has been very difficult to do that from the touchline.”

Sounds like a good solid 2-0 win.

Solid without truly getting it going at any stage. Certainly deserved winners and never troubled at the back. A good 3 points when under a bit of early season pressure. Let's hope we can back it up at Tonbridge who won well today at Havant. Whitehawk might need to get a bigger cheque book out!

I actually thought we got going quite nicely in the second half. Some very nice stuff down the flanks that played to our strengths. Biggest worry was that a bunch of missed chances in the first half might have ended up costing us but all came good. Binns and marv both impressed and central midfield of Ali and Rivs nice and solid. Back to back clean sheets for the first time in a while. No question telfs makes a difference for us. Mind you, Tom shanked one late on and had to recover sharpish or he would have looked a bit daft. Fair play to the super six travelling fans from the coast who kept up a fair old racket throughout which belied their numbers. Got no ground but despite the hype you have got a few fans. Maybe we should have had the game in the bag earlier and could have had a few more goals but I will take a steady win like that any day.

I thought we dominated and really should have been in front by half time. There was some great passing and movement off the ball but all the intricate stuff came to nothing because we couldn't finish. Dale Binns was lively from the off and struck the post after fashioning the opportunity with a fine run. JT probably should have netted after finding himself clear and Marv produced a good stop from the 'keeper after more excellent play.
When the goal came it ended up being rather simple. Telfs floats in a free-kick and skip meets it with an emphatic header. A goal conjured by a combined age of what, 80?
Whitehawk, who had a couple of decent opportunities in the first half, rarely looked like scoring in the second, although Erskine proved a handful at times.
The second goal saw Dean Mac with his first touches weave his way into the box and set up Dundo who "placed" a shot in off the top of the upright. There was one scare for U's when Tom sliced a back pass but recovered to keep it out of the net.
2-0 did not really do U's justice today and Whitehawk looked the weakest team we've played this season, although that could be because we started the match very well and progressed from there too. MOM for me today? Skip. Great header and assured performance at the back. He and Downer have been our most consistent performers so far but our attacking play was very good and the visitors got off a tad lightly. 3 points though and that's what was needed.

I found it frustrating watching today's performance.Could & should have scored a few before half time.Glad to have got the three points but at the moment i don't feel the team has gelled enough to make it better than the one that finished last season.I feel there should be a place for Moses who in my opinion has played well when called upon & was surprised he was not in the squad. Why is Telfs playing? There was a time today in the second half when he had three opportunities to put the ball in the box and declined them all.I feel he slows our tempo though he defended well today.
For me the man of the match was their number 5 who was superb all game.

Good result. It's these sorts of games that we need to put to bed without fuss if we're going to mount a serious challenge. And that sounds like we did exactly that.
To please some of our fans, only the woefully poor start made by cray (conceding nearly 30 goals in 6 games) has prevented the 'second team in the borough' from propping up the table. 1 win and 6 defeats out of 7. Cracking stuff fir the team slightly fortunate to be playing in the ryman premier this season.

Although I wasn't there I presume he was playing in a right back position because both folkes and Nelson have looked very fragile in that position so far and it looked a weak point in our defence. The main job of the defence is to defend so in that respect he did the job. We've not conceded with him in the side.

A very routine home win; exactly what the Doctor ordered.
Some far from clinical play in the Whitehawk box meant it was a bit tighter than it probably had any right to be. The fact that the closest the visitors came to scoring was after a miskicked back pass says it all
Special shoutout for Sam Rents today who was by a distance the best player on the pitch. Whitehawk's supposed danger man on the right wing got no change out of him all afternoon and some of his wing play going forward was fantastic.
Good stuff!

I agree, Sam Rents is always very solid defensively and strong in attack. We need a right back version of Rentsy and then we'll be real title contenders. Not too easy to find though.

The highlights and manager interview should be available tomorrow evening, but I thought I would show you Tommo had the situation well under control

I thought we played one of the weakest sides in the league today and if anything were too desperate to get the win which we should really have had in the bag by half time. Dale just gets better and better for me and Jamie wasn't to be denied the goal he deserved and Dundo finished off some great work from Dean M and the result was never in question. Telf's adds solidness to the back 4 but then Whitehawk had little or no pace in their side. Apart from that one chance in the first half the back 4 didn't really put a foot wrong and its our 2nd clean sheet in a row.
Really nice to see Alan and have a chat again.
