In terms of playing style Whitehawk were more like Staines than Stortford or Concord which may help to explain why we won today. They let us get the ball down and run at them! Their keeper kept them in the game in the first half, saving twice from Jamie T when he was through on goal, then twice from Marvin, but he was powerless to stop Jamie S's bullet header fives minutes after the restart. Once Dundo had angled the ball into the roof of the net for our second there was little doubt about the outcome. Dean McDonald is rapidly gaining a reputation for providing assists from just inside the dead ball line.
So that's W2D1L2 with the seven points and a gd of +3 putting us 9th.

I found it frustrating watching today's performance.Could & should have scored a few before half time.Glad to have got the three points but at the moment i don't feel the team has gelled enough to make it better than the one that finished last season.I feel there should be a place for Moses who in my opinion has played well when called upon & was surprised he was not in the squad. Why is Telfs playing? There was a time today in the second half when he had three opportunities to put the ball in the box and declined them all.I feel he slows our tempo though he defended well today. For me the man of the match was their number 5 who was superb all game. Although I wasn't there I presume he was playing in a right back position because both folkes and Nelson have looked very fragile in that position so far and it looked a weak point in our defence. The main job of the defence is to defend so in that respect he did the job. We've not conceded with him in the side. We haven't conceded but Telfs isn't a long term solution. Why not play Simon there with Moses & Skip at the back.

There number 5 was great... Especially when he lost the run of Stuart and gave him a completely free header....

I also enjoyed watching the oppo no 5. He was straight out of the late 70's early 80's with his playing style, stature and haircut. All that was missing was a pair of skimpy shorts. Dont see many old school centre backs any more. Especially enjoyed his 'emphatic' clearances. To be fair to Downer though, he was also top quality and looked back to his best, while I agree that Rents was excellent.

I also see from Sky Sports News that Sutton have now amassed a rather nice 77 points already!! s13.postimg.org/qmxihc3iv/image.jpg

You have a point we seem to have 3 quality centre backs but no nailed on right back. Our only specialist one hasn't performed yet and the rest are in the 'can also play at right back' category. This include downer who is doing a great job at centre back and rivs who also is doing great in the centre of the park. Folkes is also in that category too he's much more of a midfielder. Its the one position dos always has the biggest problem to fill.

2 FA Cup final captains on the pitch at once in a Skrill South game, surely a first for this level?

While there is no doubt that Sutton were the better side by a mile, I think that Saturday's victory over a team that is very weak defensively (except for the goalkeeper) covered up a number of cracks:
- failing to put clear chances away (Jaimie T has had a few one on ones against the keeper he has failed to convert - although his all round play is excellent)
- turning off defensively - don't think that we deserved a clean sheet - Whitehawk had at least three clear chances to score
- over-reliance on Tom Lovelock to play sweeper - how many times do we see Tom have to rush off his line and then get caught in no man's land.
Probably shouldn't focus on the negatives when there were a number of positives, but can't help feeling that a better side than Whitehawk (like Bishps Stortford) would have punished us and we might not have won a game that we dominated.

The only good chance I can think of for them was a free header where they should have scored 1st half. Think you'd settle for most games like that. Having said that they were easily the weakest side we have played. Will be interesting whether they will splash the cash to improve having seen the guys from last year are not up to it. Also shows that Dorchester may struggle big time this year as they hammered them. Dorchester have gone public about a very low budget this year so whether they can retain their status will be interesting. Possibly they could do it by default by not spending given at least Farnborough and Hayes are in difficulty and we are only just out of August.
Keepers are very much sweepers these days and Tom usually does it well. Obviously he'll prob get 1 or 2 wrong this year and it may be costly on those occasions but he has to do that job.
As for chances yes we missed some but at least we made them. Given Taylor and Slabber are proven goal scorers I'm sure over the course of the season they will take a decent percentage in comparison to other sides.

It's easy to be critical, but players at any level make mistakes. Yes, Jamie T probably should have put away at least one of his chances on Saturday, but from what I've seen so far I reckon he'll score a lot of goals for us. We still haven't seen the two Jamies play for any time as a striking partnership but that combination has great potential.
As regards the defence, only five teams in the Conference South (excluding Farnborough!) have conceded fewer than us so far - and two of those have played a game fewer.
And it's interesting to see Whitehawk described as the weakest team we've met so far. They finished 12 points above Concord Rangers in last season's Ryman. Perhaps Concord are just adapting a little quicker.
