Well it seems like we're hosting a full on international tournament! The CONIFA World Cup matches are being played at our very own stadium! For those not aware, CONIFA is the association of "national" football teams who for one reason or another are not affiliated with FIFA (i.e. they are disputed territories, unrecognised states etc) The actual host "nation" are Barwara, part of Somalia but due to the political climate there, the games are being played in Sutton. Aside from my obvious uncomfortable feeling that Northern Cyprus have qualified, this is quite a major thing to happen for our ground and club! Great work for those involved behind the scenes who have put this together, this really is quite a coup! More details here www.conifa.org/en/wfc-2018/

Politics aside, this is a wonderful tournament, and a dream come true for me, because I'll finally get to see Tibet's national side play, a football team which captured my imagination ever since I read Mat Guy's eloquent and passionate paean to the grassroots game, "Another Bloody Saturday: A Journey to the Heart and Soul of Football".
Something to look forward to for football purists everywhere in the post-season!

I'm definitely going to look at trying to get down to GGL for this. What a great honour for our club

I have been lucky enough to travel the world with my job, but at first I thought of these places I had only been to Tibet, Tamil Eelam and the Isle of Man. On clicking the names to find out where they are - I find that I have been to Southern Slovakia, Vancouver and the Piedmont without ever realizing they had separate territorial claims. What chance one team never gets past immigration at LHR?
Oohah suggests this comes to Gandermonium's Republic of West Sutton only because we have 3G. Of course, because it will stand the wear and tear. Or do you think the fake nations insisted on playing on fake grass?

Could've sworn I saw another thread about this last night - must have got deleted. My knowledge is very limited of this tournament so will have to read up about it but what a feather in the cap of Sutton United to stage some of the matches.

The link doesn't mention us. Wikipedia is a bit better. Are we the only ground, it's not clear from Wikipedia? With 16 teams in 4 groups that's 24 matches in itself. Then presumably 7, or 8, other games in the remainder of the tournament.

Only our ground has been officially announced (on their twitter feed). By the way, have you got that source of postponed games I asked for yesterday? I think it would be really useful for the strengthening of the 3G argument.

It seems we are one of 6 venues and will host 6 games, 2 of them being group games (assuming the unattributed internet source is correct). Which suggests we are hosting 4 of the 7 (or 8) knock out games. Given that ratio I guess that means we are likely hosting the final.
I suppose we need to wait for proper confirmation in due course, but it seems a great thing to be honoured with.
