Tomorrow, 5th March, will be our our 120th birthday. Although there are bigger anniversaries to come, we thought it would be nice to have a few celebrations all the same. See www.suttonunited.net for more details. We will have some great former players coming back for our Legends' Day, including friends we haven't seen in over forty years.

I have no record of our first match played on the club's birthday however the first as a senior club (the club earned that status in 1910) was in 1921 when U's defeated Wimbledon in a South London Charity Cup 1st round tie at home by 2-0. The most recent was the win at St Albans in 2016 when Jamie Slabber came on as sub and all that followed that!

I purchased the history of Sutton United FC on reaching the milestone of its history in 1973 on being in existence 75 years. It was and still is a very good read covering this period 104 pages for 50p!!!!! A few years ago it was still available in the club shop and here we are 45 years on. It covered an insight into the various seasons during this period covering the lows and the highs and there were many. In 1933 the club nearly went out of existence due to a deficit of £300 a street collection was made and the club was saved. Younger supporters may ask why Chocolate and Amber as Sutton's Colours. Before the Sutton St Barnabas Football Club was formed a cricket club of the same name was already functioning decided to purchase 11 caps the colour chosen was Claret and Gold quotations were sent out and caps in the chosen colour were 17/6 ea an alternative was Chocolate and Amber was 3/6d the cheaper colour was chosen and eventually became the colours of SUFC in stripes. After amalgamation of two local clubs on March 5th 1898 played their first senior match against Norwood and Selhurst Fc at Sutton on the 24th September 1898

A day late, but with some football to follow, I will venture to the 'Robin Hood' where the plaque on the wall of the bar indicates SUFC was formed in the room above - and sink a pint of Winter Warmer in celebration.
