Quite frankly, anyone displacing someone like Rob Hughes, even for one game, is a fecking good signing in my book. Sadly Oscar didn't feature today, so my guess is he flew into T5 and is still waiting for his f*cking lugage!

To say it's a 'sad signing' is utterly ridiculous. The club are approached frequently by players wanting to sign for us and it's not often that we actually sign them up - the people at the club are not idiots. Yes he might turn out to be pants, but he could also turn out to be fantastic - who knows??? The club certainly know better than any of us. It makes no difference what country he is from, what language he speaks, what league he has been playing in or whether we have all heard of him. The club have obviously signed this kid for a reason so let's hope he turns out to be a goodun. Well done Ernie et al for having a punt on him - if you don't buy a ticket, you won't win the raffle.

Think we are going back to the old argument here Rob. Its more of a case of finding people who want to sign for us rather than the other way round. Sadly enough it doesn't always go right at the time, but then occasionally you get a gem, someone who just turns up out of the blue (Efan being the perfect example)
Again when you can only play 11 players at a time, some players do get the hump when they are not getting first team football. We all know of a couple of players this season who have left to get regular first team football. Some have dropped down a league or two, others have been doing it at this level. But I suppose its the manager who decides who they think is good enough or not.
Personally I wouldn't dismiss anyone who approaches the club until you are aware how good/bad they are. To dismiss someone because they have come from abroad is silly, and bordering on racist - it shows a mindset of being out of touch of the modern game. OK this player may end up being utter toilet, but give the chap a chance!!!

Rob, we might have a great youth system but the point you made about being bottom of the league says it all - we clearly don't have enough quality at the club so are searching far and wide for talent. It's a good idea, not a bad idea. I say credit to the club for doing so and, like I said above, we turn down an awful lot of players who want to sign for us - it's not like someone has come along and said "hey I can kick a ball, when do I start?" and the club have said "oh this guy sounds great, let's give him a contract and see what happens". The people running our club DO know what they are doing. Your loyalty to our youth and reserve players is commendable but please be realistic - it's simply not possible to turn every one of our youth players into a Nicky Bailey or a Matt Gray, so sometimes we have to look around for talent from elsewhere. For example, when we're bottom of the league and desperately lacking quality.

Good points and like Andy K,s reply, appreciate your comments,it did just seem an unusual type of player to sign,I would have thought someone with some expeareance would have been a better choice ,whereever he came from I suppose. And I do take your point on Bailey and Gray,Bailey in particular quality player as we all know.

Just so that everyone knows, thanks to the wonders of the world wide web I get at least ten e-mails EVERY week from players (who are all the next Pele, of course) who want to play for us. I read EVERY one. 90% are politely rejected We would like to look at every applicant in training but that simply isn't possible. About one in ten seems to have some sort of background that makes it seem worthwhile for me to forward to either the first team or youth/reserve team manager to make a decision. Many of these players get a phone call, a few are invited along to train. In Oscar's case, we were approached by his agent. The registrations deadline is tomorrow, Oscar was signed so that we have the option to play him if he is good enough. If he is not of the standard we require, we have lost nothing. He might turn out to be another Efan or Nas. Perhaps not, but someone at some time will be that good and you have to look in order to find them.
