So with the National League fixtures being released a week on Wednesday (4th July), who does everyone fancy first up on the opening weekend (4th August)? The previous two campaigns have seen us begin with home games.

Away to Gateshead or Barrow. Get one of them out the way before the weather turns problematic.

I will still be walking from John O'Groats to Lands End as the season starts so will undoubtedly have to miss a couple of the early fixtures (and the PSF's). Solihull Moors away might be a chance to be flexible with the route and catch my first game of the season though! Shame we lost the Torquay away fixture too.

Are you doing it for charity and if so is there anywhere I can contribute? If it's early in the season you could possibly witness Chesterfield away too.

There are new things called trains these days.

I injured a hamstring this winter which is still healing. As such it is by no means certain I will be able to complete it so have not (yet) opened it up as a charitable fundraise. It's awkward taking pledges, and then not fulfilling your challenge, and giving money back that the pledgor doesn't want to be returned either etc. I am currently in Peterhead (Div 2 I think!) so about 20-25% of the way there depending on my choice of route. When I get to about the same percentage remaining I will probably nudge the charity button, but as it stands it's more of a personal challenge. I've given myself 3 months, and am 3 weeks in. Hoping to be back for the children going back to school (and 3 family birthdays including my own), and the second round of the Irn-bru cup of course.

Via Peterhead, your taking the scenic route I guess the A9 is rather boring.

Via Peterhead, your taking the scenic route I guess the A9 is rather boring. Yes the A9 is very boring, and not the safest place to be walking either. But you're right I am somewhat off what might be considered a "normal" route. Given I am aiming for the most western bit of the mainland it's a bit odd to be at the most eastern part of Scotland. The reason, as odd as it might sound, is that I used to work for a Scottish bank until recent redundancy. I have made many visits to Scotland in the past, but always to either Edinburgh or Glasgow. Imagine being Scottish (or Welsh or Irish) and visiting London and then claiming to have "done" England. A nonsense. By hugging the East coast I am managing to "bag" Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, and Perth, as well as countless other smaller places (and giving my hamstring the chance of avoiding the Cairngorms). Maybe more applicable to the Irn-Bru cup thread than this one, but it is interesting to note how many Highland League grounds I have seen already, and by the end of this first leg of the walk, the number of Scottish football grounds I will have seen will be impressive. Whether I will get to return to any of them wearing my "amber colours", or not, we will see over the coming season.
