Passion covers the full spectrum of human emotion i.e from love to hate. With hate you get anger and with anger you get abuse. In France there used to be a law (might still be) "crime de passionale" (excuse the spelling but my French is worse than my English - which takes some doing). That law tested a criminal act, normally murder and if found to be a c.d.p. the defendant would escape a guilty of 1st degree murder verdict often commuted to manslaughter. I can't think of anything more abusive to an individual than taking their life. So if using the word passion to describe some fans' penchant of giving the ref some abuse is "dressing it up" then perhaps the definition of the word passion should be change to reflect that, so as not to confuse me or any other poor soul that has spent their adult life thinking it was based on the definition within the English language. Very eloquently put. This is where political correctness and life crash. We should all be standing/sitting and not say a word, because our fathers and grandfathers-and mums and grand mums-used to voice their opinions that was then, now we must bow to the PC brigade. There is a dividing line between abuse and passion and as law abiding citizens most of us know how far to go without being told. If the Crime of Passion had been on the law books in this country Ruth Ellis would never have been hanged. That's a pretty ridiculous straw man. Sit and say nothing? Don't you make any noise to SUPPORT your team or do you think all noise should be negative? The whole thing with the flare could well have been done out of passion and wanting to show support for the team in a big way. Obviously that's a way more extreme example because it could cause serious injury but it's hard to know where to draw the line. Personally I think if a fan as passionate as me can avoid being abusive then others can, but I agree it's a matter of opinion exactly how important that is. Edited- sorry- posted early by mistake

Not sure throwing a flare can be characterised as a crime of passion. The fact it was brought to the game in the first place indicates it was a premeditated act. A bit like what Chekhov had to say about guns... once a gun has been introduced in a play, it has to be used. Ditto with taking a flare to a football match... noone takes such a thing to a game not intending to use it.

Well, at least we've got back to the origins of this thread.
I think the fact that the potential of causing serious injury is after where the line should be drawn.

There's a big difference to me. Using you as an example. I've heard you hundreds of times and actually without exception you have a pop at the ref when they get things wrong and you always post after if you think the ref has been good. Your delivery is passion/abuse (whichever you prefer) but you are just as quick to praise as you are to be critical. That's a very different approach to those who will just be plain nasty for the simple reason that they are the ref or they are an opponent. And not comparable. Your approach is based on what your are watching. Others are based on prejudice. I know which approach I'm more comfortable in hearing. It's not just purely being the ref or opponent which irritates me. It's obvious refereeing decisions that seem unfair or dirty, sneaky things that go unpunished.

All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; Does that evolve marrying a certain singer? No, it’s just that some teams have better actors than players. DRAW your own conclusions from that🤷🏼♂️

Looks like I quoted the wrong post 🤔 I was trying to be clever by inserting Shakespeare into the literary highbrow post but also having a dig at certain clubs with their on-pitch antics.

Getting back to the point of this thread, has the culprit been identified?
