JP (John Parsons over to you...) I think the coach will have wings for this one. Or it goes on a boat

The Sc0ttish Challenge Cup is a complete distraction and will jeopardise our chances of competing for a play-off place this season ; I accept we were invited to take part but the board should have remained focused on what the main objective of the club is . Forget all this grand history stuff - nonsense!

I'm sure this is a very exciting game for some but we must not forget we were due to have a home match with Barnet on that Saturday which would have been expected to draw a large crowd. No doubt the club will miss out on revenue playing it on a Tuesday ! Why do we need to not forget that? It's done now and isn't going to magically change back to a Saturday if we keep thinking about it, so why dwell on it? As for pouring all the club's resources into challenging for a play-off spot, I don't see the logic since we can't even get promoted without ripping up the pitch and spending most of the money we'd gain from promotion. To me it makes far more sense to put a reasonable effort into doing well in cup competitions where we can gain good publicity and prize money and build bridges with other clubs.

Well that's one way at looking at it but its certainly not mine. I'm not sure if i would have bothered sorting out my trip to Barrow if we were not going for promotion. Cups are fine but you won't continue to get good crowds without the club aiming to reach the next tier of the pyramid.

I'm not saying we shouldn't do that, just that we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket.

How many were introduced to the club in the first place (and became regular supporters) on the back of cup exploits? That's how I started 40 odd years ago, and I am sure there must be more recent supporters on the back of our FA cup run.

Forget all this grand history stuff - nonsense! By that conclusion we should not bother with FA Cup, National League Trophy or Surrey Senior Cup. Let’s put ALL our eggs in one basket and hope we can get promoted and then worry about the costs of renewing the pitch. And this would be without any additional prize money we might win from these competitions to help with the renewal cost.

Forget all this grand history stuff - nonsense! I guess it depends on what you think the “main objective of the club” is. After 50 years of watching Sutton I look back on Amateur Cup and Trophy finals, FA Cup runs with Leeds, Coventry, Arsenal, Anglo-Italian games as the standout memories. I’m looking forward to playing Bohemians a lot more than I would going away to Morecambe in League 2. As far as I’m concerned the objective of the club is to give us supporters those memories.

Yep that's how I found myself a regular at GGL since then I been away going to Ireland as you can see really got the bug, introduced the club to a few people, couple have been already more on there way. Aiming for promotion is something you have to do of course but these cup distractions definitely have there benefits for the club I'm sure.

Spot on. This could be something we're still talking about in 40 years.
