Good goal - looking forward to seeing him play 4/5 games and then we hopefully will see that type of goal from him. He’s got a battle on his hands with TW & RL up front plus Paul/Ian’s ability to switch our formation to 4-3-3/4-5-1

Seems to be who will play with him rather than will he play to me!

Seems to be who will play with him rather than will he play to me! GARETHL: that’s an interesting thought. I think he has to bang in a few before you can say that. TW has started to motor once again (Airdrieonians he was top class) & RL does so much work which is under appreciated. Good to have genuine competition and I think with those 3 we have serious competition for 1 or 2 positions depending on set up of the team.

You can say that indeed! My view is it will soon be Jonah and Tommy if 2 up as first choice. There will be more than enough games to go round though and all will be needed.

I have to say of the front two combos I have seen so far this season, Lafayette and Ayunga looked like the most effective in the away game vs. Maidstone. Their link up play was good, they always ensured there was never too much space between them, and most importantly, they communicated well throughout the game so they were always on the same page. With the number of fixtures ahead of us, there's an abundance of opportunity for all our forwards to establish themselves.

Sol: I think the problem for Lafayette is that he needs someone playing off his shoulder if we are going to play high balls in to him, and Tommy doesn't do that. Some like Byron last season suited that better and it worked for a while. Dos has other combinations to try, but for me Laf and Tommy doesn't work as a partnership, although Tommy on his own works well to stretch a defence, and is always likely to put in a moment of quality like yesterday. Have not seen enough of Jonah to say he is the answer, but the stats don't lie about our lack of goals vs the chances our play creates.

Partnerships take time to gel and 3 into 2 or 1 just doesn’t go - so for any of the 3 to firmly establish themselves as the firm No1 might solely come down to who scores the most. Good puzzle for Paul/Ian to solve. On a wee different note would love to know what our first choice 11 would be (everyone fit and not suspended).....

Ha, I hope not! Probably could have done with a little punctuation. Guilty.

All 3 have their own individual strengths and who plays depends upon the opposition and our own formation. From what i have seen of Jonah,he looks a good prospect but with all young players he needs to be brought on carefully & not overplayed.

I have only seen the games since Maidstone having missed the start of the season, but Jonah is very inexperienced and raw. He needs to learn to read the game despite his obvious potential. You can hear the players, and bench, shouting at him the basics, such as which side of the pitch he should be on for goal kicks etc,, which is a bit concerning in the big picture.
At best for me at this stage in his career he can only be an impact sub, which is pretty much what he was yesterday. So given the way we set up to play under Dos (and I have no inclination to criticise to undermine the gaffer) that means Ross starts and it becomes a question of who you play alongside him. If you want Jonah then Tommy has to play behind, or is on the bench, and you juggle with which of the creative midfielders you need to drop (Taylor?, Beautyman?, etc.)
I'm happy to leave it to Dos to do what he thinks is best, but I think it's the case at the moment that Jonah is too far from the finished article to expect him to feature too much in the starting formation.

Are you sure you're not thinking of drinan as that's a far more accurate description of him than JA? Early days I know but that first 45 at maidstone was one of the most promising performances I've seen from a sutton debutant striker in a long time. His touch, movement and communication with lafayette were anything but raw. As trev says they looked like a natural partnership. Will be very interesting to see Wright in behind but I think it doesn't leave much impact from the bench so might not see it unless were chasing. Will also be interested to see how Wright and JA gel when they start as lafayette will always need rests due to his style of play. Good problems to have though. Three strikers playing well is very rare for us!

Maidstone was better than Havant granted, but he had 20 minutes on Saturday and made the impact off the bench.
What worries me (and I was standing next to the dug out) is the number of times he needed to be shouted at just to concentrate on what should be simple and natural stuff. Standing on the wrong side of the pitch for goal kicks, missing unchallenged headers etc.
Hoping it will click in due course but Ross doesn't give you those little headaches.
As I said I am happy to leave it to the boss to pick the team, and he certainly sees more of all of the players than we do. Like in most position the quality of the squad presents us with nice problems to have.
