After about 30 minutes yesterday, JC turned to the terrace and shouted something to the effect of “why don’t you encourage us instead of moaning all the time”.
I don’t know what provoked that and no-one around me seemed to react. Did anyone else hear this?

Did anyone else hear this? didn’t hear it but if that’s true good for him honestly can’t believe what I hear sometimes 🙈 never did understand how people think negativity out loud will produce anything positive.

Dreadful game though as Billy said. We seem to have lost our way attacking wise. the loss of TW and selling RL straight after has left us without a goalscorer, or target man. Arron is certainly improving but his scoring record speaks for itself, Jonah is clearly a very good player, but isn't a centre forward and can't do it all alone. We need a goalscorer, but they're like gold dust. But this is what the manager does best, find gems from somewhere

The hypocrisy of football fans was defined beautifully yesterday by two incidents. In the first half the ref stopped the match for their guy after the ball had struck him in the face. Skip wasn't happy about the stoppage and the visiting fans showed their displeasure at him in the usual manner. Second half Cloughie goes down and the ref stops the match after Jamie B saves and the D&R fans start moaning - some want it all ways. Difference was Cloughie's 8 stitches to their fella's need for a drop of cold water.
Not saying there was anything untoward but a cut that bad means some level of contact and Cloughie appeared to be pointing out one of their players as he trudged off trying to stem the blood flow with a towel.
I start with this because yesterday was one of those afternoons where the football failed to set many talking points. I'd argue that D&R probably deserved an equaliser more than Chesterfield did but as we know, football ain't like that.
With a stiff breeze heading out of the Collingwood Road gates U's had the conditions in their favour for the first half. They dominated possession but only KC forced Justham into any real action and I thought our attacking play lacked the spark it had in the first half on Tuesday. The visitors' main threat was a couple of well-worked set pieces but neither came to anything.
Second half U's got in front. Nicky B's shot squirmed and bounced across the 3G and Justham could only spoon it out straight to KC who finished easily. Then followed a near repeat of the last 30 mins of the Chesterfield match. Two subs on and the deployment of a long throw. This time Jamie B had to make a couple of smart stops and push another onto a post but in the end Sutton held out.
It wasn't pretty but much of the NL is like this and in the end the best shot of the match resulted in the only goal, even if indirectly. It ended Angelo Balanta's winning run at KCS/GGL and he didn't look half the player he did when with Boreham Wood a few short weeks ago.
Thought the ref had a pretty decent game although would argue that the tackle on Aaron D could have been a red. It was a cynical, high and strong challenge with absolutely no attempt to play the ball and bearing in mind skip's red at Aldershot earlier in the season a yellow looked not to be enough.
As for skip's comments to a section of the fans it would appear the cardboard cut outs are back - I am sure delboy could enlighten us as he tends to stand in that area.
Sometimes you have to win ugly. We did yesterday but that shouldn't be frowned upon as silky, entertaining football ain't always possible.
Onto the big FA Cup tie with Slough next week and the return of our mate Jack Turner who appears to be on top of his game at present having won a NLS award for October this month. This will not be easy.

Looks like Paul's photos picked up the moment of impact on Cloughie's forehead. Their guy a bit late to head the ball and heading Cloughie instead. No malice or intent.

I never saw JC remonstrate towards the graveyard terrace area but to be honest it was kind of quiet on there with a resigned acceptance that Dagenham would equalise before the final whistle. Maybe it was directed to another area of the ground.Anyway its a little more different on there nowadays with bigger crowds.

I can't recall either keeper having to make a save in the first half. Game woke up after our goal but as Mr Drake said, sometimes you have to win ugly which is what we did. All that matters is the 3 points and now we're only 6 or so wins from safety with 28 left to play. That's always our first milestone to reach and I think we've still got more points than this stage last season.
Now onto the cup where we need to make sure we do the job. I've every confidence we will.

We need a goalscorer, but they're like gold dust. But this is what the manager does best, find gems from somewhere Well said, although I didnt think the game was so bad. We tried to play on the deck and pass the ball, on the balance of the last two games we deserved at least 4 points. Ref was very good (didnt notice him for the first 45), hope to see him well before our friends Rock et al. Dos will surely have to address this striker situation at some point in the near future, whether thats the return of Dundo (could be good foil for Jonah), a loan or a contract signing. Drinan looks so much better on the left of a 3. He was totally ineffective for 70 mins against Wealdstone in the centre, but very impressive when he moved out wide for the last 15-20, but sorry he just hasnt got the skillset to be a central striker. Jonah looks much more comfortable playing off a target man or also out wide in a 3, he's not the sort of player to lead the line either. Bola and Keiron also are wide or withdrawn players so that leaves us, IMO without an advanced/back to goal forward. MCA is spot on when he says these 20+ a season players are like gold dust, you can count on one hand the strikers who go on to consistently do that year after year in any of the top 5 leagues, and the vast majority of proven goalscorers at one level who move up the leagues fail to recreate their feats, whether that be cos they had one/two hot seasons or cos their natural level was lower. How many strikers have we seen come through here in the past few seasons who could bang the goals in at a lower level but cant cut it at this level (fitchett/coombes etc). The crying shame is we HAVE that player in our ranks. I honestly believe Tommy would have had a 25 goal season if he'd been fit and stayed fit. Its devastating that he got such a bad injury just as he was getting sharp again, but its similar to what happened to Dave Tarpey and he's back in and around Barnet's first team after less than a year, so fingers crossed Tommy will be ready for 19/20 season. Meanwhile, lets be honest one of those magic forwards isnt going to appear so we need someone who can get the job done and do the dirty work for Jonah, Bola etc to feed off, even if they're not at all prolific. Hmmm, someone a bit like Lafayette, who I assume wanted to go to Billericay rather than being cut for financial reasons alone as if it was the latter we've made a mistake there (we would have been much better off losing one midfield player or sending RW out on loan if that's the case)

That is not to say Dos is wrong, he isn't, he just does not play a system that suits the traditional CF. We play good football based on pace, movement and space. That is why players like TW, RD, and TB have all done well in recent years. JA looks in that mould, but anyone who watches the highlights will see that no striker in the world is going to score goals with the service as it is at the moment. We know TB, JA, AD etc can score goals if provided the right ball, but that just isn't happening, and we are living off scraps or a long range effort, or defensive errors to get our goals. Just have a look back through them in the last weeks, one of the few actually well worked goals was our winner at Wealdstone.

Dos has usually had someone in the ranks who you would consider a target man, a back to goal player who can bring others in with flick ons and hold up play. Biamou, dundo and lafayette all forfilled that role to some extent in recent seasons and didn't shy from the dirty work. It's horses for courses. Our mobile front 3 will cause lots of problems for defences but we need a more physical option, especially when pitches get heavy. Our defence is much improved but its hard to see us scoring enough goals to really push the top sides without Tommy and without a physical presence up front. I'm sure dos is well aware and he will bring someone in sooner or later. Maybe one more will have to go to make room, we've got one too many in midfield it appears. Yes having no target man forces us to try and play it short but sometimes you need that outlet.

What we're lacking is a striker who's experienced at this level of football. Ross Lafayette may not have had a great conversion rate, but he used his strength and experience to get into dangerous positions. When he couldn't score he often provided assists; the deft flick for Tommy's goal at Solihull was an example. At the moment we're a bit too dependent on midfielders and defenders to score goals, although Tom B and Kieron (both with plenty of experience!) can be pushed forward if necessary.

In Dos's latest interview he said that a win over Slough could net us some 60K. Not counting our chickens but that's 20 overnight stays / another striker / floodlight improvements. Take your pick but hopefully a bit of everything.

Maybe he means £60K with Wealdstone and Slough combined 🤔 He's probably including the income on the day too, plus the income from the match in the 2nd round we'd get.
