A bit of a spin-off from a thread I saw on the Facebook forum. I just had a quick look and think I make this Saturdays game against Slough our 23rd tie in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup since the mid-40's.
My memories of this round are restricted to rather more recent years where we've tasted both success and disappointment (wins against Kettering and Dartford and losses against Notts County, Hereford, Kidderminster and Cambridge).
How about memories of games a little further back?

I remember the 1st round game against Aldershot as a very young boy clearly enough. A 3-0 win on my very first game at Sutton.

The late great JR's injury time winning vs Stortford 81, to send us to Swindon Town. The 1st time I had ever experienced a 1st round win, and achieve the dizzy heights of the 2nd round 'proper'..

I remember the 1st round game against Aldershot as a very young boy clearly enough. A 3-0 win on my very first game at Sutton. Snap!! I would have been about 8 and I thought beating league clubs 3-0 happens all the time! I clearly remember their player getting sent off too. The first round penalty shoot out win over Kidderminster in 95/96 was a pretty good one! I missed Sutton winning at Colchester in 93/94, that will be up there! Dartford was pretty epic although i left before Ross's 3rd (and our 6th) goal.

The first round game in 1975 (?) versus |AFC Bournemouth. My first ever trip to GGL. Too young then to attend the replay though...

My first was also the Aldershot game in 87. Macca's header was a dream.
If I'm right, that was the start of 7 consecutive seasons in the FA Cup proper. I don't think we've topped that since, although we went out in the first round a number of times there (Torquay, Merthyr, Maidstone, Hereford), we also had some great victories too in that period (the 4-0 away to Dagenham in 88 and that crazy game at Colchester in 93)

My first Sutton game (in fact the first proper football match I ever went to) was the 1st round replay against Kidderminster in November 1995. I couldn't have picked a more memorable game. First to extra time and then to penalties and Sutton keeper Gary McCann making a couple of outstanding saves to give me a real thirst for FA Cup glory. Unfortunately I was to remain thirsty for a while as I wasn't able to attend the second round tie at Hereford (which we lost anyway, of course) and we didn't get past the qualifying rounds again until 2008.
(I've just realised this meant I had to double my age before seeing us in the first round proper again - in other words I waited an entire lifetime to quench that FA Cup thirst!)
As Sutton manager, John Rains (who took over after the 1995-96 season where we got to the 2nd round proper) seemed to have some sort of FA Cup curse hanging over him. He was in charge for 10 years during which we always seemed to lose 1-0 at the 4th qualifying round stage, never made it to the first round proper and the next time we did so was shortly after he left the club. Poor Rainsy.

I've been to a total of eleven of our 1st Round fixtures. The very first time was back in 1975 as a schoolboy, standing on the curved terracing, captivated with the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.
Although I’ve seen us eliminated from the competition on five occasions, the only one that I look back on with painful memories was the 1-0 replay defeat to Merthyr Tydfil in 1990 (oh Macca, how could you miss from there?!).
I didn’t catch the Aldershot victory in 1987, so my favourite match has to be that exhilarating 4-3 win at Colchester in ‘93. That game was one heck of a ride!

I did attend the 2nd rd defeat to Notts County a few years ago but my FIRST first round game was the thriller at the tunnel (Dartford).
Dartford 3 SU 6
That was some game - end to end and R Deacon & R Stearn both sparkling (it was November 05th) that day.
