Boxing Day 1963
Blackpool 1 - 5 Chelsea
Burnley 6 - 1 Manchester United
Fulham 10 - 1 Ipswich Town
Leicester City 2 - 0 Everton
Liverpool 6 - 1 Stoke City
Nottingham Forest 3 - 3 Sheffield United
Sheffield Wednesday 3 - 0 Bolton Wanderers
West Bromwich Albion 4 - 4 Tottenham Hotspur
West Ham United 2 - 8 Lackburn Rovers
Wolverhampton W. 3 - 3 Aston Villa
Two days after those matches were played - on Saturday December 28th 1963 - several of the heavily beaten clubs found themselves playing the same opposition in the reverse fixtures...with some interesting results. So two days after beating Ipswich 10-1 Fulham lost 4-2 to the same opposition at Portman Road, West Ham beat Blackburn 3-1 at Ewood Park and Manchester United had their revenge over Burnley with a 5-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Those were the days Billy when an attack consisted of five forwards and defence wasn't so important. Inside forwards moved back from the attack to help the half backs !

Not a 0-0 in sight. But who are Lackburn Rovers?

Our second 1-0 win on the spin. That's six points and two clean sheets. Things are looking up. So that's a measure of revenge for the Trophy defeat (if that result stands). We stay 8th, but are now only three points behind fifth-placed AFC Fylde. Today's attendance of 2086 was our biggest at home this season. I wonder what the actual attendance was as it didn't really look like that and I'm sure all season ticket holders are counted in whether they attend or not.

A memory jogger. I went to Upton Park. My friend's father was driving them both to Fulham and asked me if I wanted to join them. I persuaded them to give me a lift to Putney Bridge and got the tube. " You missed 11 goals!" my friend teased when I got home. "Only by one" I replied. I saw a lot of West Ham's later Boxing day games - often with big scores but nothing quite as crazy as the 1963 game.
