The National League posted this in response to the latest social media fad
My reckoning is that only 3 sides are still in the division, and at least 7 clubs there went pop (or close to going pop) because their moneybags backers went away (for a number of different reasons)

This got me interested to look at the make up of the league Sutton were in in 2009 and staggering the Ryman league has more current National League teams in it than the Conference did. Sutton, Dover, Boreham Wood and Maidstone.

How much money does someone need to put in to a non league club in order to be deemed a moneybags backer ?

The money that doc-Martin put in to rushden and diamond. 100.000 for a goll keeper there’s your answer.

Enough to completely change how the club is run from a financial perspective, to the point where sudden withdrawal of the extra funds has a catastrophic impact on the club as a business. Obviously the amount itself will vary from club to club.

But of course Barrow and Ebbsfleet were relegated and then came back up so only Wrexham remain.
I thought it was more than 7 that went pop or had severe money troubles. Look at Histon! Wow!

At least 10 clubs I would say. I’m including Lewes in this

It's quite stunning to think Wrexham have been in the 5th tier for at least ten years. I have no idea when they were relegated from the Football League.

Our 1st encounter with Wrexham ended up a 5-0 drubbing, our last one ended up a 3-0 win, shows what a difference a few years have made.
I see Histon at the top a decade ago, whatever happened to them ?

When we were promoted I looked at how long each club had been in the division and Wrexham had 9 years at the time. So not that much longer but still a long time. I think Gateshead have been around quite a while too, obviously not as long but a good few years.

Yeah Gateshead were relegated from the Conference in the mid 90s, and eventually came back up via the play offs at the end of that season (08-09). Been there ever since.

Gateshead were in the league in the 1950s I think but I really didn't realise that Wrexham fell out of the league so long ago.

Do Forest Green hold the record for most consecutive seasons in the Conference? (I know it's no longer called that but it's how I have always known it).
Something like 21 seasons.
