Gateshead were in the league in the 1950s I think but I really didn't realise that Wrexham fell out of the league so long ago. That was a different club Dave - the current one was only founded in the 1970s. I think the one you have in mind is Gateshead AFC.

In the attached article it says that they reformed as Gateshead United. Is this true? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateshead_A.F.C.

No, Gateshead United was a completely different club and (I think) the predecessor of the current Gateshead FC. Both AFC and United used to be South Shields something or other I think, and United were renamed and moved from South Shields in response to AFC going bust, so I can see where the confusion comes from. In fact I'm not 100% sure I've got it right myself but I think I have! Just editing to clarify because I re-read my post and it makes no sense South Shields Something -> renamed Gateshead AFC -> get into Football League -> go bust South Shields Something-else -> renamed Gateshead United and moved to Gateshead as replacement for AFC -> repeatedly fail to win election to Football League -> go bust -> reform as Gateshead FC If anyone knows better please correct me! I'm beginning to think "the history of football in Gateshead" could be a Mastermind specialist subject but it sure as hell ain't mine.

Now you've ruined my day . Mention of South Shields inevitably makes me think of North Shields and that fateful day in 1969 when I watched an outstanding Sutton team who were hot favourites lose to them in the Amateur Cup final at Wembley. Still find it hard to believe we lost that match . I'll be OK in a couple of hours

The history of football in Gateshead & South Shields is complex and convoluted.
The current Gateshead team were formed in 1977 (formed it has to be said in the wake of the demise of Gateshead United, but a new club nonetheless). They were not previously anything else.
Beyond that- try to fathom it out using the FCHD website, but I would suggest you make sure you have a lot of time to work out the history of previous football in South Shields & Gateshead
