Having been forced to watch the match on Saturday from a different position I wonder why the dugouts are where they are. I couldn't see anything going on along the touchline at the other end - including the accidental collision with the assistant referee.
Are there rules that they have to be a certain distance from the touchline? Why can't they be repositioned about 10 yards further back thereby not blocking anyone's view.

This subject came up a few years back when these new dugouts were put in. I can't tell you the reasoning but i believe a lot of viewing space in the enclosure was lost due to their positioning.

It's quite obvious. It is so the benches and therefore the managers, coaches etc are closer to the pitch. They were too far away when part of the pitch perimeter fence.

Judging by the amount of time that Bairdy and Dos spend in the stands each season, I don't why we don't do away with them completely

The distance between the touchline and fences at the side seems much greater than it used to be even a couple of years back

The dimensions and position of the pitch have changed slightly in that time so that's not surprising
