Bizarre! Top of the league after putting some fine performances in and then, this. We of all clubs should know about the cup and if you don't go out and apply yourself as normal then you get hurt.
Fair play to Alton they had more energy, perhaps more desire than we did today. They didn't put ten behind the ball and save for one foul, didn't kick us up in the air, either. We did miss a shed load of chances & should have had a second half penatly. But you certainly cannot blame the ref for this exit, we should have been good enough to win it without relying on the call of the ref.
For the record, that is the first time we have gone out at this stage since 1968!!
Anyway, that's one distraction out of the way - just a few bob down the drain too.

I thought we were on top in the first 25 minutes, with Costa getting some decent crosses in from the left and BWG looking lively on the other flank before scoring with a screamer. The problem was that soon after we took the lead our players seemed to assume the game was won. Once Alton settled they showed they could play a bit, and some sloppy defending gave them an opening which their substitute took advantage of with a great strike. We revived slightly in the second half, with Jolly hitting the bar, but once Alton got their second the game looked up. Even throwing Goodliffe up front didn't make much difference, and he went off before the final whistle with what looked like a facial injury. Excuses? We did have five key men out injured, and some of the players may have been tired after the long trip and gruelling match at Hastings. Consolations? With only one game now scheduled for the rest of this month we've got time to get players fit, and we won't have a Cup run as an autumnal distraction from the league campaign. Pity about the £3k though.

What showed today, and possibly from the Hastings game, was that we do not have strength in depth. Injuries to two or three players make us look very ordinary. We clearly missed Dundo and Fola, and one or two players really did fail to take their chance. I am glad we don't have a game for ten days as this result will take a LOT OF GETTING OVER for players, supporters and management alike. In terms of disappoint it is right up there with the infamous Yeading debacle.

I think this set of results today puts our performance in perspective:
Hornchurch 8 Oxhey Jets 2 Lowestoft 7 Desborough Town 0 Sutton 1 Alton Town 2 Wealdstone 7 Tring 0
Alton were the longest odds of any of those sides!
I am sure I will get corrected but to me one of the worse results in our history and even bigger giant killing act by Alton then us beating Coventry??

Can we put those results up in the changing rooms v Harrow please? BTW, the rest of the league is pissing themselves tonight at that result.
Undefeated, top & 3pts clear and yet, they're laughing at YOU.
Get it sorted.

Tonyd, do you really think bwg had a bad game?? He had a cracking game up front. Unfortunately, the wide men have to put in a stint in midfield as well, otherwise you end up like we did today, Davis and Dunford against a 4 man midfield and not enough possession to win the game. Alternatively, you tell me why Alton had so much of the ball? I thought we were very naive - we seemed to think we could just pour forward and that would be it. Not without the ball you can't. How often were Goodchild and Page just pumping the ball forward or playing square across the back? We just didn't have the bodies in the middle of the park to pass to.

best thing that could have happened in my opinion. i know the cash monies will be missed, but the 4 extra games that equates to a 1st round appearance would probably have ruined any promotion chance. anyone criticising the poor performance should look at the run of games we've had plus injuries, all so early in the season. if youve played football at any level then you must know how easily a tired team can be turned over by lesser oppo. i think we will walk the league this year and this will only work in our favour, and i cant believe the level of criticism over one poor display.

A mate popped along for his first ever Sutton game. He did enjoy himself and said we played some cracking stuff til we grabbed the first goal. As soon as they had a decent effort go narrowly over they got at us and quite rightly beat us. My mate also said he couldn't believe how little our players wanted it. I think it was Taz I heard who said Alton would never get that amount of space and time in the Wessex league! Right then, positives are BWG and I'm not too sure you can blame Scriv for anything. Oh maybe it's just positive not positives. Worth bearing in mind they comfortably beat Chichister City and dumped Merstham out of the cup before us.

Holmes ~ in case you didn't notice, Lowestoft blasted their oppo today and are still in the cup. Therefore, it is probable they will reach the 3rd qual, making it a Tuesday night match !
