I would attend more away games but can't (for reasons I won't disclose, some know anyway) go on my own. I will drive, but would need a navigator someone riding shotgun, and perhaps put a couple of coppers toward petrol costs. Saturdays are not to bad normally but games like last night was too far for me to go on my own.
I would also like to travel on the Supporters coach, but with the last two running at a loss, I can't see the Club running any more. This being the case, train will be the alternative to get to Bury, and look forward speaking to everyone to find out their arrangements.

I'm still being treated for that. Saw every game of the relegation season but fortunately the doctor recommend heavy drinking as a cure Only missed two myself. And one of those was due to flu! The question that should really be asked here is "WHY?"

The question that should really be asked here is "WHY?" I think the answer to this question was comprehensively answered on your old website, Taz! ;D

To be perfectly honest, even I couldn't drink enough to blot out that season. Lord knows I tried!

The question that should really be asked here is "WHY?" It was still better than watching carshalton. Or something. BTW I didn't have a season ticket that season and only missed one home game in the league. I often wonder about my mental state.........

To be perfectly honest, even I couldn't drink enough to blot out that season. Lord knows I tried! I only really have clear memories of St Albans and Bath away now. It was a pretty successful course of action. Sadly the pain reignites itself at every moment where a Ryman game isn't going our way!

That was the most horrific season I had as a Sutton supporter, and would have been enough to put some fans off for life, especially that 12 or so game losing streak between January and March. You don't lose 28 games out of 42 and ship 86 goals without it mentally scarring. Plus the fact that really it should never have happened - the squad was there, but confidence was shot.
Saying that, one consequence is that the last 2 seasons and this current one have seen have been some of the most enjoyable I've seen - genuine contenders, the arrival of Dos who's been a real blast of fresh air, and a couple of decent cup runs to boot. This season has a real feeling like our centenary year - a couple of decent contenders with us, with us lurching a bit, after a couple of top 5 seasons (Where Yeovil a couple seasons before that did a Dover and ran away with the title with many matches to spare)
Those of us who remembered going to Aylesbury that day in March for what was the title decider should know what I mean.
I've said this already this season and last night kind of reinforced it. We are the team everyone wants to beat. We are seen as the biggest team in this division - and certain fans from other sides have made this well known. Without being arrogant, because it's not meant to be, but we are too big for this division - every team that has played above this level (Canvey, K's, Hornchurch, Margate, Maidstone) has to some degree or other had some cash injection to get them there - the only REAL exceptions are Bobbins (who struggled in C South Level), Wealdstone (who to be fair had their fair share of bad luck, but were the first team to do to Conf and Trophy double) and Us who had 5 successive years at Conf national level (plus another!) and 4 years at Conf South level. Plus one of the biggest grounds in the league, with an FA Cup pedigree to die for, with constantly some of the highest average gates, and a solid and successful club infrastructure.
No wonder we got abuse last night at Canvey, and we will do so again at other clubs before the season is out. The best response anyone can give to that is beating them on the field. So lets carry on doing that.
I fully expect us to be AT LEAST in mid table obscurity in the Conference South next season once again going to places like Weston, Welling, Maidenhead, Dorchester and Havant. And to be honest that's where we belong. Not Conference National, that is pretty much a full time league now, and we are not big enough for that. I'm still convinced come May time, we will be saying goodbye to the Ryman league for hopefully a very long time

Was not at Canvey so stayed out of the thread until now, but on the general comments from Andy:
2007/08 was the most painful season I can remember and some of those defeats really hurt and are etched on mine and many others memories and will be until they are erased. I don't really care what other clubs think of us, most of them have chips on their shoulders anyway for one reason or another. After that season and the previous 2 playoff defeats, I think other clubs confuse our desire to win the title for arrogance.
I know that there is not one club or bunch of supporters that wants this title more than us?

I am soooooo glad that I missed the last relegation season. The only contact I had was text messages for goals, H/T and F/T scores. Together with a verbal update later on the telephone and reading on-line reports and views from the terraces. The last 2 and a half seasons have helped my re-habilitation nearly as much as my medication. I am still a pessimist, still think that there is an oppo goal in their next attack and still wonder why I go every week but at the end of the day I would rather watch us lose than hear about it via texts. I have still to miss a competitive game this season (cue for me catching the flu ) and if we are in the BSS next season I will try my hardest to be at Weston and all other points of the compass. Because that is what I do and once you have the bug it never leaves you. Dooes that answer your question Billy? ;D PS when the Foxes played a pre-season at GGL I sponsored the ball, had a chat with Micky Adams and was confused for 90 minutes on which team I was watching. ;D

My opinion is that was the least painful relegation season because our expectation was that were were going to struggle. At least statistically we were better that season than the horriffic 07/08 season!

I was at the canvey game and your support was very good. With no sour grapes you were the better team, but even some of your support could not believe the referee. Both were penalties but the 1st was immediatyafter a dreadful foul on Heale not given, and where was our penalty when Hallet was dragged down from behind in the box.Funny old game footy, but i thought with an even handed referee we were worth a point. Hope you can afford blue square south.

Hope you can afford blue square south. Thanks for the post, carrioncrow. There's already been a debate about the officials in another thread on this page. As most Sutton fans were standing close to the goal that our team was attacking, we won't have had good views of incidents at the other end of the ground - so difficult for us to comment on the ones you mention. But some of our lot thought the Canvey defender who handled in the box (for the second pen) should have got a red card instead of a yellow, so perhaps that's a decision where the referee erred in favour of the home team. I don't think there are any worries about us affording Conference South - but we've got to get there first! We've got some tough fixtures in Jan and Feb (Bury Town and Cray away, Lowestoft at home) and will need to keep winning regularly to stay ahead of the pack.
