Well two poor passes led to their goals. Our passing was poor all night.
We lost Bailey, skip and I assume Cooper to injury (Coops was subbed at the same time as Collins got injured and that was our last sub) so we finished with 10 men. Wish had a shot tipped onto the post in the second half but that was really our only chance.
The ref was awful giving some very strange decisions.
Right, on to Saturday. Onwards and upwards

Well Dos wasn't back for this one and the team was set up rather defensively in my way of thinking.Thought Dundo could have partnered Fitch up front as we never really looked like scoring. We didn't deserve to go through if the only goal we could score against Bognor in two games was a penalty.
Their main attacking threat came from down the wings and us not playing wingers to help cover played into their hands.

Didn't do enough and the last remaining ten players were out on their feet at the death. Our chance to win this tie was in the first 45 on Saturday and from then on we struggled against a confident Bognor side who are bang up for claiming the scalps of teams above them and who I now fancy will roll on to Wembley. We will have to see what the final analysis is from the treatment room after that tough two hours last night but the way things looked I suspect we may be looking for reinforcements for a hard and conjested run in. All need to regroup now and continue our fine run of form in the league.

So so gutted to be out the Trophy (especially losing in extra time) and as a result our long unbeaten run is over too. I couldn't make it last night but was avidly following on various Twitter accounts.
Our already small-ish squad is now looking very thin as I understand we picked up more injuries tonight - we may need to draft a couple of the youngsters in for Saturday plus recall Louis John and Tommy Wright.
Win or lose - up the U's!

If you go the route of defeats only count over 90 mins then we're still on quite a run. Got to love how stats can be manipulated.

On 28 November I made a deal with the Devil. "Give us 3 points next week", I proposed, "and I don't mind if we lose today". I thought he (or she) had accepted, but he was toying with me. Now here we are, a few quid richer but having played 5 extra games, with the inevitable impact on the squad's fitness, availability due to bookings and jamming up the schedule of league games.
Fortunately God saw my plight and thought I had suffered enough. Realising that we were about to go through on penalties (I don't think either side were going to score in extra time). He sent the Angel Gabriel who assumed the guise of Becks to put an end to this nonsense.
Thank you God and thank you Becks. Now let's concentrate on getting promotion, or there's a good chance we'll be playing Bognor in league matches next year. And not even the quality of the burgers and bread pudding will compensate for that.

Having missed the first game, I can only comment on the replay. Regardless of own goals, penalties, dodgy reffing, their No12 diving at every opportunity etc, I think it's fair to say we were beaten by the better side on the night. Although obviously we had a bit of a makeshift team and trying to use a formation to fit the players, Bognor looked more composed and less prone to mistakes. To me, the game was lost for us in midfield who I thought had an especially poor night, but then I don't think most of the side could say they had one of their better games. Both goals started from misplaced passes from us (Bailey the 1st and Stearn the 2nd) but it would be unfair to single them out as there were plenty of others. I thought we lacked shape, but more importantly confidence - we looked a little scared and intimidated.
Of course it could have been so different if Wish's shot was a couple inches to the right it could have been so different, but as it is we're out for another year, but can take consolation that this has been our best trophy run in 16 years. In circumstances that we were a little lucky to have.
Let's focus on the league - playing at home which we'll feel a lot more comfortable with. Now we can see our focus is clearer without this distraction.
Disappointing, but there's a lot of football left to play this season!

Football Web Pages gave the attendance as 941, it looked a lot more. However they also said Dan Fitchett scored our goal!

Bugger Bognor. Bizarre Bognor as well. Bugger not because they ko'd us from the Trophy (they deserved their win) but because of the injuries we sustained over the tie to add to the ones already in place. Bizarre Bognor because of the bloke with the bin (Reeves and Mortimeresque) and Jack Pearce on the tannoy. Mad, humorous but while the match was being played? Highly unprofessional, not that it should detract from Jack's superb service to BRTFC or football in general.
Bairdy said in his interview after Saturday that we had to be more careful with the ball. Unfortunately we weren't and on two of those occasions the home side reaped the rewards. The first a point black finish for Prior, the second, well. Poor Dean Beckwith. He has been excellent during the unbeaten run and was pretty solid last night too. In the end it took that error for Bognor to win the tie. Yep, they was the superior team on the night but while the defending at time was a little chaotic, Ross Worner, U's MoM, was a brilliant last obstacle.
So with Kevin A and Craig M already missing, U's added Spence and Tom B to the casualty list. Add that to losing Skip, Nicky B and Simon D last night plus Craig E not being 100% (he would have started otherwise) and one suspects some of that FAT money (a bonus considering the original 3q round defeat) may have to go on shoring up the squad. It would have been interesting to see what may have happened had we had the squad that was available for the Chelmsford match just ten days ago plus Bedse. All ifs and buts certainly, relevant, absolutely.
So to our match official last night. Promoted for last season to the National Division one does wonder how bad the other protagonists at the time must have been? Five cautions? Dan Wishart's was a joke as was Craig E's. He lost the plot in the second half and I suspect the booking for simulation of their fella was an incorrect call too. He got our pen right but missed another minutes later on Bedse (and I had a perfect, uninterrupted view from just a few yards away).
We've had this fella (shall I refer to him as "mess of ..."?) on numerous occasions and he is not very good and proved that again last night.
Dos has some headaches at the moment for sure. But we didn't choke as someone else suggests. The squad was down to the bare bones last night and I called the result before the match started because of it.
On the plus side; a first competitive goal from Fleets who was our best attacking player all match.
Good luck to Jack and his beloved club, I just hope their fixture pile up doesn't hamper their battle for the Ryman title.

I thought Craig E showed a huge amount of energy as soon as he stepped onto the pitch last night. He seemed to be quicker than the rest of the team.
The ref was equally bad to both sides. I was level with skip and thought it was a blatant foul. Couldn't believe it when their guy got carded. But how the ref kept his card in his pocket for some of the other offences their guys did I just don't know. He allowed play to continue on a number of occasions but should have then booked a couple of their players for the blatant shirt pulling.
I thought Fleets was our best outfield player. Worked his socks off.
Just hope our injured guys recover quickly.
Was the crowd really 941? No tickets handed out so no way of recording apart from counting the cash that could have easily been pocketed! Looked a much bigger crowd. I would have thought 1300 would have been more accurate

I would have thought 1300 would have been more accurate I'm sure many will remember visiting a quite full Peterborough United where the attendance was given as about 3500?
