Since my time of being a Sutton supporter I have always heard the conversations of where Sutton is. A lot of people say it is Surrey as the postcode is SM. Sutton was in Surrey until 1965 until the borough became a London Borough. It clearly states Sutton is in South London. If you disagree with me say why because I get annoyed by how Sutton is apparantly in Surrey.

That is correct. Sutton is a London Borough within Greater London. Search up Sutton London on Wikipedia.

The Surrey thing (people still insisting on it, I mean) is basically to do with postal addresses. The ground's postal address is in Surrey, because it's in Sutton which used to be Surrey before the boundaries were changed. Understandably, the Post Office don't want to muck around changing people's addresses every time a municipal boundary is shifted so, like the whole of Middlesex, there are a few "fossils". You are right then, Ryan. My mother, bless her, refuses to acknowledge anything that's changed since about 1950. She "corrects" me if I say I live in London because she still believes it's in Surrey. Point out it's a London borough and she says, " Greater London!" as if that was a totally separate place from London The only distinction I can think of between "London" and "Greater London" would have to be The City of London, or anything within those ancient city walls. So by Mother's logic, places like Chelsea, Westminster, the West End and Greenwich are NOT IN LONDON. This goes to show that mother does not always know best.

Can certainly understand the post office not wanting to make changes but addresses can be rather ridiculous, my home address has me in Surrey with a Croydon post code, even though I live on the border of the boroughs of Sutton and Merton!

As someone who now lives away from Sutton, I often just say I'm from South London

The reality is that Sutton is a London Borough and therefore it falls within Greater London and not Surrey. The distinction came from the formation of the GLC the 'Greater London Council' when areas outside London such as Sutton we amalgamated into London itself and therefore lost their county status.
Unfortunately Greater London has never really been accepted into the London family and therefore became a kind of no mans land between the city and its county. This is something which has cost our club the media coverage it deserved over the years, not seen as part of BBC Surrey area, but tagged on to London which has far bigger fish to fry.

Not being concerned with apparent realities imposed upon me by others I consider my county to be Surrey

Besides, there is no such thing as 'South London'. There's a North London, but south of the river there's only a Southeast and Southwest London.

You can be with her if you like, but she is wrong.
Of course, if you want to identify as someone from Surrey, that's your prerogative. Nobody can tell you what your identity should be. But Sutton hasn't been in Surrey since 1965.
The Southeast/Southwest thing only makes complete sense to me if we are allowing our sense of reality to be dictated by the Post Office. Some people do consider us southwest London, and that's fine, but I don't.

It's an interesting debate and open to interpretations in my opinion. I regard us in Surrey and having resided in Wallington and Carshalton all my life I have never had anything addressed to me as Wallington, London. It's always been Wallington, Surrey. Surrey County Cricket club is based in London, SE11 and not Surrey. When it comes to Legal Aid rates there is a lower charge per hour for London than outside London so my argument is that Sutton, Croydon etc. although Boroughs of London are not inside London. They're not the same as SW, NW, EC etc. At least Surrey exists unlike Middlesex

Also consider myself Surrey, mainly from a historical sporting perspective.

I've always known it as Sarf Lahndern, but I recall that John Motson once moved us to the Surrey stockbroker belt.
It won't be long before everywhere inside the M25 is London.
