The first of two home games on the spin.I think it goes without saying that we could do with a victory at home to halt our slide down the table. Chesterfield recorded their first victory last week and a lot of people are surprised at their poor start this season. No team is easy at this level but its very winnable.

Matt will surely feel that he needs to deliver three points in at least one of these next two matches.
Chesterfield were tipped by many for the title, so their slow start has been one of the surprises of an intriguing NL season. They have scored in all but one of their eleven games. Like us though, they've only kept one clean sheet. So an attacking approach might be called for.
The visitors are likely to have Scott Boden and/or the towering Tom Denton up front. Denton has a habit of scoring against us.

Well done lads. Excellent result, decent tactics well executed and some really good individual performances. Very enjoyable.

Boom! Have some of that.
Going back to being a normal person that was brilliant. First home win of the season and the first league win at home since the 16th March.
Unless I am very much mistaken.

Maybe his best game for the club. That pass he made to drag back the ball for Jarvis' opening goal, my goodness. That's the kind of ball Lineker et al wax lyrical about on Match of the Day.

That's the way to do it! More positive from us today, and we were rewarded not just with the first league win at GGL since mid-March but our biggest victory since February 2018.
We started with Aaron Jarvis and Tommy Wright up front, Will Randall returning on the left side of midfield and Tom Bolarinwa continuing at full back in the absence of the recuperating Dale Bennett. It was Tom's combination down the right with David Ajiboye that provided much of our early threat.
This was a much more open game than last Saturday's, both sides having opportunities to open the scoring in the first twenty minutes, the visitors coming closest when defender Will Evans rattled the crossbar. The breakthrough came when Ajiboye, who was giving the Chesterfield left back a torrid time, skimmed in a cross that Jarvis thumped home from a few yards out. Some sloppy defending from the Spireites then let in Wright who rolled in our second.
We lost a bit of momentum after half-time (unsurprising in the heat) and, after Chesterfield had brought on Denton just past the hour, they did briefly threaten to get back into the contest. But then MotM Jarvis burst through in the inside right channel to lash home his second. A fourth goal in stoppage time from Harry B (his sixth of the season), arriving at the far post as he'd done against Notts County, was the icing on the cake.
That result lifts us to 13th, four points clear of the relegation zone and four points adrift of a play-off place.

A thumping first home victory! Chesterfield’s performance matched their league position, their defence looked leaky and their attack looked blunt. Nevertheless, the task is always to beat what is in opposition, and Sutton’s 4-0 margin is the clear evidence they put to the sword what was a dispirited team on the day. Interesting for me, because I have written many times that I think Beautyman and Eastmond do the same job and should not play together, that Beautyman and Barden playing as a two man midfield were terrific. Instead of a third midfielder to replace the suspended Craig, MG started with two up front - Jarvis and Wright - and two wingers. The first point to make is it stretched the defence. When Aaron is up front alone, he frequently has two men to beat. Today Sutton attacked on a wide front so Jarvis had single coverage. Secondly and as important: with Tommy sharing the target man job Aaron had more energy left when he was called on to make the forward runs and thanked the boss with two cracking goals. Finally, because U’s were not defending a 1 goal lead in the closing stages, we played out Fergie time at their end not our end. Result, a little bit of luck with the bounce as we played out of the corner flag routine – a low centre and Harry rushes forward to bag the fourth. It is in the mind really – we could do the same when we are defending a 1 goal lead.

I thought today we were excellent, carrying forward last weeks defending at Wrexham and adding the end product. Interestingly we conceded a lot of possession particularly in the 1st half, and played almost like the away side. Chesterfield always had a mistake or 2 in defence, and when we got the opportunities we took them. 2nd half I felt Chesterfield completely faded away, and U's were well in control with the superb 3rd and 4th adding icing to the cake.
Can't praise the defensive lads enough for building a platform to allow Javis and Co to show their wears upfront. With the likes of David Ajiboye, and Tommy Wright in the side the oppos are never going to get a minutes peace.

Certainly a good performance but I have a different view of the second half. Thought we played well in the first half with short passing but in the second went further back defending the two goal lead. Chesterfield got into the game and we went back to hoofball. Particularly obvious when Wright went off. We scored the third against the run of play and that killed off Chesterfield. A good result and lets hope the momentum continues Tuesday.

What a great result ! It always seems a bit better to me when beating opponents who have spent so long in the football league.
I know nothing at all about Chesterfield's recent history but do remember them being unlucky losers of an FA Cup semi-final (to Middlesborough ?) in the nineties.

You are right. 1997 when Chelsea beat Middlesbrough in the final when Roberto di Matteo scored after 43 seconds. Chesterfield took Middlesbrough to a replay in the semis and had a certain Kevin Davies on their books.
