United were drawn away in every round that year albeit after the Forest tie against opponents from lower divisions.Every game they won was by the odd goal.Palace were the first top flight opposition they met after Forest.
I went to the semi final replay at Maine Road against Oldham and the Palace replay.

Thought Man. United finished about 12th or 13th. Villa were the runners-up in 1990. Edit: Ah you mean runners-up in the Cup not the League. Ooops.[/quote 13th is right !

Not wishing to contradict but i'm struggling on the 6 players u21 that we fielded. Perhaps that is too many to play at any one time in a National league fixture. Not quite correct but... Ben G 20 David A 21 Will R 22 Tommy W 22 Dan M 22 Aaron J 21 Isn't that the argument, young squad, young manager, early in his 1st season -Its a gamble, but it could very well pay off. The alternative is cheap experienced players, a circuit manager, and IMO probable eventual relegation anyway.

I seem to recall they had a fairly easy passage through to the ECWC final the following year, too.
