This is the first of four consecutive league fixtures against clubs which, as far as I'm aware, Sutton have never played before.
Exeter currently sit 9th in the table, six places and two points above us (though we have a game in hand). Their results so far this season have been decidedly mixed; they've only won twice, but those were emphatic victories (4-1 home to Bristol R and, last Saturday, 4-0 at Scunthorpe). Their only league defeat was 3-0 at Orient. Four of their games (three of them at home) ended 0-0, including against Wycombe in the Carabao Cup (Wycombe then won on penalties).
Their main danger man appears to be the pony-tailed Matt Jay, with four goals to his name.
Exeter has improved as a drinking city since my student days there in the late 70s and early 80s. My recommended pub is the stalwart Great Western Hotel (EX4 4NU), almost next door to St David's Station and so very handy for those travelling from or back to Paddington. Dating back to 1840, it has a traditional bar and restaurant open to the public. Expect a good choice of ales, including some from local breweries.

Most of us are going from Waterloo but nevertheless still handy.
We’ve still only played one club in the league that hasn’t been in non league since the War. And that doesn’t change next week either

The match thread on the Exeter forum is worth a read, the post below made me smile: Although Sutton is now a regular London Borough, it was until relatively recently a genteel place with Cheam, Banstead and Epsom close by. The support is at best encouraging in a downbeat sort of way. You will hear chants not heard since the seventies with clapping to accompany...The club is run by committee and the members of the committee still wear blazers with club tie and club crest on the pockets...Bradford, it ain't..www.exeweb.com/forums/threads/exeter-city-versus-sutton-united-league-2-discussion-and-prediction-thread.63198/

As an Exeter resident am really looking forward to this one. Those travelling by car be aware that as the ground is very central to Exeter all the roads in the immediate vicinity are residents parking only. If you want free parking suggest the opposite side of Union Road/Prince Charles Road from the ground as the restrictions there don't apply at weekends. Then about a 5-10 minute walk to St James Park. For the Exeter manager's view of the game: twitter.com/i/web/status/1438519717493309440

And that doesn’t change next week either For a few seasons Exeter were just the one division above us. Then 2008 came and we ended up 3 divisions below them in a flash. The following season they were in League one whilst we were in the Isthmian. So 10 or so years ago, we were 4 divisions below them. We now play them as equals. Yet another reminder on how far we've come!

Exeter are a good side who have spent much of their time in league 2 pushing for promotion and just falling short. They will offer us another stiff test and I imagine we will have to be defensively very strong to get anything out of this game.
I will predict a 1-1 draw as we are on good form, and I will certainly take it.

I think its great that the club sticks to its old culture and it shows how those who run the club feel about the club. I hope new generations that come in over time maintain this.

I think there are a few things about the club that some people might scoff at as being old-fashioned, but I completely agree with you. What I'm really proud of is the way our club still has its heart and its own unique personality even after all these changes that have meant we've been forced (usually for good reasons) to do things the same way as our peers.
We don't want to lose that. It's what makes our club so special.

Apparently Sutton are wearing the green strip tomorrow. Arguably not the wisest decision given who Exeter consider as their biggest rivals…….

I don’t want to sound critical, but we were on top in the first half but did not take our chances. Just like Tuesday evening were we dominated the first half but only scored one goal. For me the difference between the confreres and leagues two is the finishing, I mean how meany chances did Exeter have three really good ones and score two we had a hat full so Matt cannot be happy with that and also most of the second half, so as I said It’s not criticism just observation.⚽️

You're right in your observations, banjo, but I think we're doing everything right and just need somebody to find their form in front of goal. It WILL happen I'm convinced of it. We have an excellent management team and a board who won't make any rash decisions - let's settle in and enjoy the ride!

Story of the season so far, not clinical enough. If you dont take your chances your performance means nothing. Onwards we go. Have to give them credit for another good showing but they could be in a more comfy position if they tuck more chances away.

Well the committee has moved with the times, if not to catch them up. Directors and distinguished others travelling away may wear blue suits with the club badge, leaving the grey flannels for home matches. U' haven't yet hired a manager who looks like Sparky Hughes or Scotty Parker in suit, tie and crisp white shirt on the touchline, but given their results, perhaps Matt's tracksuit is safe.

It's only to be expected that as a team moves up the football pyramid, its mistakes are more likely to be punished - that includes defensive errors and strikers missing chances. We have seen a number of examples of this already this season. It's important that we don't consider ourselves to be 'unlucky' and feel sorry for ourselves. We need to be more clinical with improved concentration and better quality. If there was any doubt before the season started as to where the bar is set in League 2, those doubts should have been dispelled by now.
