Late to the party as ever these days.
Another great EFL win for U's. A pretty even match; contrasting styles with the hosts quick passing movements while U's mixed it up as ever (or hoof ball as the Crawley forum suggests - that place is well worth a look if you fancy a laugh). With no Easty, Harry B returned to give a disciplined display in the middle along side Ali S who again impressed. The hosts had done their homework, doubling up on David A although Enzio had a bit more freedom on the other flank. U's defended well with Coby Rowe heroically overcoming that appalling incident to continue his fine partnership with Louis J. I hope Coby is ok. He has had to deal with a fair bit in recent times.
Crawley had three pen shouts in the first half and I am not sure any had merit, maybe the early one. I said to kbb had h-t that the ref will give them a pen eventually and I wasn't wrong. And what a joke. It didn't look one at the time and certainly on the highlights. Forward back to goal, sticks his arse out waiting for the contact and drops to the floor. The ref wasn't immediate in his decision and he got it wrong. Three bookings over that. Louis J, Rob M for a bit of skulduggery and later Dean B. Deano needs to calm down a bit. It was a great penalty save but shoving it down the takers throat on the halfway line isn't worth a card. Two more and suspension beckons; I doubt Matt G would be happy about that.
Then the goal, scrappy but Tanto got his head to the ball with an impressive leap and his first EFL goal won the match. Well done all. Another reward for the hard work being put in by all concerned.
Thereafter, the ref lost it. He had let a lot go already. Their no 6 (Dallison) a big unit still felt the need to hold onto Ritchie B at every challenge but the ref gave very little for holding offences so was consistent in that approach while the no 5 spent most of the match tangling with U's forwards and getting the hump if they had the audacity to react. The foul on Tanto late on was blatant but the ref played on. The FL Paper gave him 5 out of 10 and I wouldn't disagree. The Crawley programme curiously had the ref down as manager, queue observation re a brewery.
Once again the home club let themselves down with regards to looking after away fans. As others have said Covid is still very much in our midst and with enough space at that end why were we crammed in? Last week, U's allowed a number of Vale fans to stand over by the tardis because it was too packed in the limited away end that we currently have. Why the hell couldn't Crawley have done similar yesterday? Ground regs broken as people had to stand in the yellow step ways that as we found at Northampton should be clear of obstruction. What if, as seems to have sadly happened at Newcastle as I type, an emergency occurred? Getting to the emergency quickly would have been very difficult. Had something untoward occurred Crawley could have been charged with negligence and would only have themselves to blame.
Interestingly, the FL Paper gives a gate of 3,572 so that's exactly 3,000 home fans; really? I reckon there was a fair few more in that away end than was announced.
On to a very tough home game on Tuesday. Swindon unbeaten away. Can we end that as we ended Crawley's unbeaten home one?
