And still they come, fixtures that find me rubbing my eyes in disbelief. Is it really Sutton United playing yet another team that I used to watch flash up on the Grandstand teleprinter each Saturday, all those years ago (if you are under 50, ask your parents or Grandparents). Anyway, after three points mid-week, and the run of two losses arrested, a bit more confident about this. Injuries may play a part in our performance, but this game says score draw to me. And according to sources from Walsall, they’ve sold out their ticket allocation. Another 3.5k gate guaranteed!

Another 3500 gate would be good for the coffers and bearing in mind our league position quite achievable. I'm hoping to see Craig back in action as we are not quite the same team without him. What i am finding in this division is its difficult to know the strength of the opposition based upon their league position.
Taking Northampton Town & Exeter City as examples they lie 3rd & 4th respectively but we completely outplayed both, all be it that Exeter took advantage of us not scoring and won. These are certainly exciting times for Sutton supporters.
The bookies have us as even money to win with 12/5 a draw and 11/4 on a Walsall win.

Have a day off I’m very much under 50, and I have wonderful warm memories of Grandstand. It’s also pretty much the first place I ever heard of the mighty Sutton United.

I think he maybe referring to the teleprinter rather than the programme.
Not sure when modern technology kicked in to replace it as I was always at football so rarely saw it.

It looked like a rapidly moving black tongue at the bottom of the screen, which ‘typed’ out the score, sometimes pausing halfway through a result, leaving you in suspense. A memory from the late 60s, very early 70s.

There's already a long thread on the Walsall forum about this game. Some of their fans are viewing it with some trepidation! The Saddlers have only won once away in the league this season, 3-1 at Oldham, but have drawn at Bradford, Exeter and Orient. They've lost at Tranmere, Hartlepool and Newport.
My sense is that this will be another tight match. Walsall have the slight advantage of not having played during the week. Their squad includes Jack Earing, who scored against us in last season's 2-2 draw at Halifax. Their leading scorer, with seven goals, is George Miller.

For those who don't know what a teleprinter was, here it is in 1963. - I've time stamped this for a specific reason, as you'll see.
The mechanical "teleprinter" was replaced roughly around 1980, by a vidiprinter, which was basically an electronic version of the teleprinter. In any final score or updates, pretty much the same approach is taken, even to this day!

Such iconic music. Used to love David Coleman and Dickie Davies.

Such iconic music. Used to love David Coleman and Dickie Davies. Don't think Dickie Davies ever presented Grandstand- he was the face of World of Sport on the other side. When I started watching it was Frank Bough in the chair with DC and Des Lynam coming later!

I know nobody loves a s****a*** but I think you will find the wonderful David Coleman was before Frank Bough. With Peter O'Sullevan on horse racing, Eddie Waring on Rugby League and Bill McLaren on Rugby Union.

Speaking of smartarses, I bet nobody else can name the badminton player at 3:13 in the Grandstand clips. I didn’t bother watching badminton much, but I did when she was on! Anyway, we digress. We really should get back on topic.

Walsall's head coach previewing the game.
The sound quality is not good at times. He talks about Sutton just before the 3 minute mark.

I've only seen Walsall play once before - 40 years ago - and to this day it remains the most exciting game I have ever seen. It was the last game of the 1979-80 4th Division season between Walsall and Newport. I travelled to the game at Walsall (from Epsom) with two of my friends who were Newport County fans. Walsall had already clinched promotion but needed to win the game to have a chance of beating Huddersfield to the 4th Division title. Newport had to win the game to win promotion (no play offs in those days). With both sides needing to win, they both went all out attack from 1st minute to last. Cheered on by 8,000 travelling fans (although only 3 without Welsh accents), Newport won 4-2 - and it could easily have been 10-10. A young John Aldridge scored Newport's first two goals in his pre-Liverpool days. Absolutely wonderful game of football. If tomorrow's game is anywhere near as good it will be a treat for all who attend.
