Another windy afternoon for football and U's FA Cup interest flew off into it following a difficult first visit to The Memorial. If Rovers edged it they probably did on local knowledge and their ability to use the wind a little beter than U's did. Perhaps the best example of that was the delivery from the f-k they scored while U's tended to overhit theirs and lose any advantage.
Perhaps too like at Orient we had another "Gate". This time "slipgate". Had Omar B who had brilliantly pushed the ball past his marker and sped onto it not lost his footing, their guy wouldn't have had the ball to play what has to be said was a superb diagonal ball that got their right flank beyond Rob M and then get the pen. Players just cannot challenge from behind these days and thus any touch and you're in trouble.
That f-k that brought their second was one of many soft fouls that the incompetent Drysdale gave while waving away more obvious ones, Donovan W being dragged down just inside their box being one.
U's probably didn't do enough to win the game but the fact the home side failed to score from open play suggests they won because of a lack of judgement rather than decent play. It was difficult for both sides to produce quality in those conditions yesterday and add on the pressure of the possible rewards to the winners, it was no classic.
Another point made elsewhere is the toll the injuries are taking on a relatively small squad. Five unavailable yesterday and Rovers listed five more than we have in total in their squad. It's all new for Sutton (the transfer windows etc) and so the management and squad have done so very well to be where they are thus far. Yesterday, it just wasn't to be.
As for the ref, well nothing I didn't expect after his performance for U's first home EFL match against Oldham. Clueless with his cards. He was on Kenny D's case early; booked him, didn't give a yellow minutes later for the tackle from behind as David A attacked their defence and then decided that a player leaving the surface to make a jumping challenge on an opponent is only a yellow. Thankfully for Tanto he wasn't hurt but maybe he should have stayed down and let his team mates sort out the predictable ensuing shenanigans. The booking of Donovan W was a complete joke
Sadly, U's lost Tanto after he accidentally ran into an opponent and his pace up front would have caused them a problem in the second. Not that Donovan W didn't cause them issues and his fine run and cross allowed Will R to fire U's in front. Unfortunately for U's, Will R will be the club's only scorer in its 100th FA Cup year.
The Memorial Ground is a decent stadium with a quite a bit of character and once they equalised the home support was loud if sometimes mocking of the U's contingent. No change there.
Newport up next, weather permitting, and seeing the forecast, a fair part of me hopes the weather wins!!
