Some posters on the Vale forum suggested U's are a big physical side. They obviously haven't properly considered their own squad. There was some big guys in their line up and perhaps their ability to match Sutton on this aspect and their use of the wide expanses of their pitch gave them the edge.
In mitigation, Matt G brought back a number of the recently injured and maybe their was some rustiness that the home side duly exploited with a fast start. The first goal came as they broke from a Sutton set piece and took full advantage of the space on their left flank. Dean B made a brilliant stop but Wilson bundled the loose ball in.
The second goal was, of course, a brilliant piece of control by Proctor but thereafter he did little else except get involved with our coaching staff and put in a crude tackle on Easty as U's look to break. True, Joe K caught him but not as badly as some tried to suggest. No physio visit evidence of that. It was an incredible goal though and you certainly can't take that away from the burly striker.
For U's this was a difficult afternoon but they kept going and Omar B couldn't keep his effort down after the home 'keeper dropped a cross and later, Joe K headed against the crossbar. Either of them had gone in and Vale and their loud home following may not have felt so comfortable.
The ref was nowhere near the worst we have seen but he made some right clangers, calling a f-k to Sutton as Enzio B raced away down the left. Made me laugh that the home fans booed that decision when it was Sutton who was disadvantaged.
No arguments with the outcome. Probably not the best circumstances in which to play PV.
Vale's stadium looked resplendent in the sunshine and offered comfortable viewing but getting into the place was like going through airport security. My bag was fully searched including removing items and looking in them. One guy asked me what was in my money/key pouch. Er, money I replied with more than a hint of incredulity. I still had to prove it. One of our band, a guy who has watched Chelsea all over Europe was incensed when a steward picked up his wallet and starting going through it. And rightly bloddy so.
The Gandermonium flag wasn't permitted because of metal clips, even though it has been given a certificate of entry for the season.
I brought all this up with a senior steward after and got the normal crap about "your safety" and stuff about pyrotechnics. I am 60 yo, am I really going to waste my money on a bloody flare? And apparently their safety officers doesn't like clips, metal or plastic. He wasn't happy about the wallet being searched though.
Just as well I wasn't wearing a cap as they would probably be looking for razor blades or did the lack of a Brummie accent disqualify U's fans from that possibility?
I am well aware of the need for security at football grounds but this was over the top and in some cases infringing on people's property. Over zealous. Ridiculous.
There was only 112 of us there yesterday (a disappointing turn out tbh) so god knows how long it takes to get in when they fill the away end?
Eight days off then the little matter of a Wembley final. Sorry, did I really just get to type that last sentence?
