His last public appearance was at GGL a couple of weeks ago.
A very sad day no only for his family and the greater footballing community, but also for the Sutton family where he had a special place in our hearts.

What a shock. As mentioned above, he came to our game against Stevenage and spoke to the players from our Coventry game and to so many of us in the boardroom afterwards. A genuine legend of the game. RIP John.

Very sad news. I was honoured to meet him after the Stevenage gave, a real football legend.

I thought he didn't look well, but not so ill that he would pass away as quickly as this! RIP John

Blessed is the person who having nothing to say abstains from giving us wordy evidence of the fact.

A true legend. He always seemed to have a special place in his heart for football clubs with more humble roots.

It could be argued that Motty began and ended his career with Sutton United. Although of course when he joined us 2 weeks ago he had been retired some years, his first test commentary (which was never actually broadcast) and which secured him a job with the BBC, was the 1969 Amateur Cup Final at Wembley. RIP Motty

Very sad news.
I remember him speaking eloquently and entertainingly as guest speaker at a meeting of the FSA in central London many years ago.

We've heard a lot of his clips (and quips) on the News from various matches, does anyone have the knowhow to extract all his best comments from the Coventry game? (including the very end where he realises that Cyrille Regis' miss towards the end was actually a great save by Trevor Roffey)
