Both halfimet and dave have written a couple of good points. But like oz I too would have been "got at" if I had posted something similar. It will be interesting to see who goes and who stays. As been said, Matt and Jason and the rest of the management team are going to be busy in the next couple of months.

Since winning promotion to the EFL two years ago, we have signed three players who have established themselves as 1st X1 regulars - Jack, Joe and Ali.

It’s hardly surprising is it? Of all the players we took up into the league maybe only 1 had had a sustained football league career - Milsom. Probably 3 others had league experience but had dropped down a level. We are in the market where we need to find people capable of taking a step up or someone out of favour elsewhere. Always going to be hard and it is our major problem. There are bound to be failures. Comes down to finances above all else.
In addition patience is needed with some. Angol obviously has ability. He’s had a lot of injury problems. We could easily see the best of him after a full pre season. I’d bet we weren’t the only ones interested in him so actually did well to bring him in. Likewise Pierre could have been a success in time. He may go on to do well at Wimbledon. Seems a bit like he wasn’t prepared to wait for a proper chance and to get match fit. Fadahunsi, Ogundega and Ridley were obviously signed as potential players for the future. If one of those works out to be a proper first teamer it’s been great business.
To me the only obvious disappointment has been Thomas. None of the young loanees have really fired but again not a couple of those were likely to add squad depth/bench cover more than anything. You are always taking a risk with these types of signings as you don’t quite know how they will go and how they’ll fit in.
No doubt it is a big off season though as we are coming to the point where our championship team are going to have to evolve. Get this right and we can really look to establish ourselves as a league club. My money would be on Matt to get it right.

I appreciate a lot of sutton fans are of the glass half full variety, but for those of us who aren't, there is plenty to worry about.
League 2 is going to be even stronger next season, especially if county or Chesterfield come up. If so I expect them and Wrexham to be top 4 sides. None of the teams coming down will be cannon fodder. Only forest green have been adrift and they will have cash to spend. Whatever happens there will be some very decent sides coming into our division.
I forsee a points total nearer 50 to stay up next season and it will be matts biggest challenge yet based on how we've finished the season. For me the most important thing is to work on some different tactical systems and plan b and plan c. To say our opponents know what to expect is an understatement. Matt needs to show he can master different tactical systems if he wants to eventually move up the pyramid (either with us or another team).
We need at least two decent midfielders to allow us to try systems with 3 in the middle and we have three quality centre backs so why not experiment with some systems with three at the back? The modern 343 is incredibly dynamic and exciting to watch.

I wouldn't like to guess who would be strong or week. It doesn't always follow that the teams coming down are strong or the teams coming up will be any more of a challenge. We will leave the tactics to Matt as he works with his group of players on a daily basis and we have no idea who he will bring in.
We wouldn't even be having this conversation if we had performed better in recent matches so lets just wait and see.

It's been said that different systems and tactics need to looked at. I agree with that.Huff ball doesn't work now as other clubs know how we play and easily work us out. Some teams we have played this season have played some really good football and getting results without using the long ball tactic.

We can't exactly be going out and getting players in to change the way we play.

Del.i quite agree with you about players. Surely we can change tactics and systems with the players we have.I may be repeating what you posted. I was just trying to say change the way we play!

I wasn't there and as I suggested I see Kylian had a start. However unluckily for him he had to be subbed to get a goalie on the pitch.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results” - Albert Einstein
A change is needed, both tactically and in the method of recruitment.
To keep on keeping on, to tread water, to do the same thing once more will result in a relegation battle next season*
*just my opinion, before anybody takes me down for being negative or disloyal…

Matt has been our manager for 4 seasons. In that time, I can't recall any changes of tactics, and to any Sutton supporter taking notice the line up and the substitutes are entirely predictable. In that time however we've become a league club (which no one ever dreamed we ever could have achieved), got the highest number of points ever in EFL L2 ever without making a play off and got to a Wembley final for the first time in 41 years and were within 90 seconds from winning a trophy against the highest ranked team in the tournament, and knocking out the 2nd highest ranked team in the semi final at their own home. Even at the start of this season, some people even with in our own ranks were saying we were going to be caught out in a classic "2nd season syndrome". We didn't and survived easily. I'll be utterly surprised if Matt changes anything tactically or in the method of recruitment (bearing in mind how restrictive our budget is). So with all affection and respect, if you are calling for those changes, and the manager isn't going to do those changes, what you want is a manager that will.

If we get into a relegation battle next season (and I doubt we will) as long as we finish in 22nd place after 46 games, that’ll do for me.

Andy K - “ I think what you are actually saying here, without realising it, is that we need a new manager.”
Absolutely not. What I am saying is that to carry on doing what the management team are doing right now - without change - is to invite a bottom of the table battle to come along to GGL for 2023-24. None of this takes away any of the success of the past four years or to not understand budgetary constraints. However, recruitment has not been a great success over our Football League tenure, and teams HAVE sussed us out and been able to negate our ‘better’ players because they tend to play the same way.
Matt and the board can deal with this. I’d be surprised if they are not thinking along the same lines as Mr Einstein’s quote above.

Matt and the board can deal with this. I’d be surprised if they are not thinking along the same lines as Mr Einstein’s quote above. Read what I'm saying though. Matt has had the same approach for 4 seasons. Look what we've got. And only 6 weeks ago we were in with a decent shout of a play off spot and really a slight chance of an automatic. Yet after 6 games at the end of a season everything needs to change? I expect no one on the board and management are even considering the Einstein quote. If teams had "sussed us out" we'd have been lower than we are. Significantly. Perhaps its more a case that Matt has a system, attempts to bring in players that will work in that system and that's the system they train to all week. That's how he manages. I'm really sorry but if you are calling for wholesale changes to that system, then you are calling for a new manager. There's no other conclusion one can make. I'm not being critical of you for making that call. As you said, it's your opinion. Just pointing out the obvious.

I get what you're saying Andy but just because Matt has had a very particular way of doing things so far doesn't mean he can't possibly change his approach. It has looked unlikely at times, sure. But he's still relatively new to the role and although he can be a bit stubborn about doing things a certain way, he DOES change those things if they stop working. Remember what he said about loan players? He changed that.
