I think Kylian should get a starting spot in both of the last 2 fixtures. We've nothing to lose and it will give him the experience he needs. He is going to be a real force to handle. Dundo mark 2.

This has the makings of a truly terrible game, with Rochdale about to be relegated and us on a five-match losing run. So a 5-5 thriller then?

With Grimsby winning tonight, we've fallen into the bottom half. With two games to play, it appears that we could finish as high as 9th or as low as 18th.

In fact, 17th is the lowest we could slip to because Walsall and Doncaster have to play each other. If you'd have offered me 17th at the start of the season, I'd have yanked your arm off, and if you offer me 17th next season, I'd yank the other arm off.

Psychology plays a big part in football when the team is on a run of results. Take the identical situation: a team mate has the ball as is about to be challenged. On your winning run he has been winning those challenges and looking for an attacking option. So you make the forward run anticipating the same this time and by doing so give your team mate the option. On your losing run he has often conceded possession so you do not make a forward run, you are half anticipating the need to run back towards your goal to defend. However, your team mate wins the challenge this time, but you are not giving him the attacking option. Managers often resort to changing players or formations in the hope the new look will break the negative mind set.
Two big examples from the EPL are the recent form of Spurs and Villa. Conte cited complacency at Spurs, he wanted to make big changes in tactics but the senior players were resistant, preferring to see new players come in to positions other than theirs. They have now lost confidence. Emery had it easier at Villa where the team was 3 points off the bottom when he arrived. So the players were prepared to listen to a man who said a change of playing tactics would improve the same squad of players. Once it started working they all upped their performance.

After being so close to the playoffs last year I am not sure I would have been happy with 17th. But I know what you mean, survival is the most important thing right now. We have generally had a successful season in avoiding the drop and at times playing some good stuff. But when you look at the bad run we are on right now you can't help but be worried and hope it's just a blip, or that some work can be done this summer. Its not like we have been miles off, so I try to stay positive.

I would like to think that we are good enough to win at Rochdale. I'd like to think so too, but the fact that we've only won 4 times on the road all season (in all senior competitions), are on a terrible run of form, and how we've gone to other grounds this season where we should have been good enough to win (e.g. Doncaster, Crewe, Gillingham) so I'm not taking anything for granted. What I do know is if we are as inept at defending as we were last Saturday, then I'd say we won't come away with much. On the other hand, a week is a long time in football, so as usual I'm going to go to the game with my usual optimism and enjoy our last away game for at least 2 months at a ground we're not going to in the league next season.

I know our players work really hard and put a massive effort into every game, and the following is not meant to suggest otherwise. But I do wonder if there might be a psychological element to our current run of form. League 2 is tough, and we're a little fish fighting to stay in a big pond. With the main target for the season being simply staying up, I've been thinking the squad might have been pushing themselves so hard to reach that place of safety that it's been hard to find anything left in the tank since we achieved it. They might not be trying any less hard, but when you HAVE to do something, the human body and mind seem to be able to achieve so much more than if we're simply trying to do something.
No complaints from me, however. Plenty to take away from this season and learn from for next season.
