What would make the club more money? Winning a round 2 fixture into round 3, a winnable home game against a higher league team that could be shown on Sky, or an away game a big Premier League where we will get a % of gate receipts? Away game at a big club would dwarf prize money in this comp. It’s pretty low amounts. Not sure on tv money. I guess even the gate receipts would be lower as ticket prices will likely be lower than the norm. Would imagine away at a PL London club would be an ideal draw for now.

Unfortunately I missed Saturday's match but was highly impressed by Harry Smith, he is a massive upgrade from Omar Bugiel. Two goals already which cn't be bad.

In the long run the first option as there is then the potential for either of the others in round 3, and further, to add more and more.

Thanks to the night time closure of the UK's almost entire road network I arrived home at 2am, but still buzzing after onw of the most enjoyable nights at GGL in recent times. I brought along to the game two colleagues from work, both Cambridge Utd season ticket holders, who came along expecting a comfortable enough victory and an opportunity to continue their habitual ribbing of me in the office for the foreseeable. They left extolling the quality of the beer, the tidiness of our bars, the friendliness of our supporters, the absolute charm of GGL [BTW do the powers that be know that the roof of the stand leaks water...?] and above all, the quality of our players and the attractiveness of our style of play. They were gutted to have lost the shoot out but otherwise enjoyed the whole match night experience. FINALLY, they understand what I've been harping on about over the years and why I follow Sutton United. It WAS a great night, thanks to everyone. It is nice to hear when people look past the obvious improvements needed (as if everyone associated with Sutton United walk about with eyes closed) and praise the things we do well as a club. Enjoy work the next few days/weeks!

I'd say not just on the pitch, but in attitude as well. Surprised you’d say that given in my book Omar gave unstinting effort and to the untrained eye showed an excellent attitude. Whilst I know Matt has spoken about a bit going on at the end of last season I’d reckon he wouldn’t have played such a key role for so long without a good approach. Not sure Matt would accept anything less. But presume you must know more about it to write it.

His performances tailed off dramatically at the tail end of last season, and he was not offered a new contract. He also, if the rumours are true after stating time and again that he wanted to move closer to home, and was offered a 2 year deal at Cheltenham, but turned it down for a 1 year deal at Wimbledon. 5 miles closer, and whose training ground is further away to his home that our one. Plus Matt has gone out of his way not to mention him at all in any interview probably tells you enough to think that things were not smooth behind the scenes. We'll see soon enough when he visits in 10 days time. I get the feeling he won't be given as warm a welcome as other players who were released in May. And I'm not talking about the fans.

Another fine 100 plus minutes of entertainment at GGL. Matt said he needed to freshen the squad up and the early indications are that he has succeeded. Great character too to twice come back from a goal (gift?) down.
I think we showed a lot of quality with the ball and worked hard without it. The first half saw Cambridge relying on quick breaks and they forced a good save from Steve A from one of these. Their first was a bit of a disaster from U's point of view but after getting over that shock eventually equalised. The second half, I thought Cambridge had more of the play without really threatening until a ball over the top resulted n a penalty. U's bounced back again and Harry B earnt then netted a pen.
The shoot out was tense but nothing on the Wigan scale. Fortunately we retained our 100% record in spot kick comps under Matt. I say fortunately because had VAR been in place or indeed the assistant observing Jack's movement off the line been of any level of competency other than poor, his two pen saves may have been retaken. But then, who cares?
A great team performance. Harry B looks back to his best, I thought Craig C was excellent in the holding role, producing some fine tackles, while Aidan O'B is a very clever footballer.
The ref last night as had a similar trajectory up the ranks from NLS to EFL as Sutton. I have been critical of him in the past but he had a decent game last night (I haven't seen their pen decision yet, mind!) and he kept his cards in his pockets. Sensible officiating. The less said about the rec side lino the better. Two very questionable offside calls against Joe K and Scott K in the second half.
I note the comparison between Harry S and Omar elsewhere. Not sure that is called for. Omar ran through brick walls for Matt and the team and his battling approach often led to unmerited yellows. Maybe at the end he wanted to move and so he did; that's the life of a pro footballer. But for 95% of his time at U's, he couldn't be faulted for his commitment and a as a fan that's all you can ask. Harry S has started well and put in two fine performances. Long may that continue.
Now to the added time (second half). Two goals = two minutes. Five different substitute occasions = 3 minutes max. I think there was one instance of a cramp problem that was addressed without the need of a physio. There was no discernible time wasting (except for the visiting fans juggling the ball for a while) plus we have multi ball. Once again the ten added seemed excessive. It is pedantic time keeping and the game's legislators need to have a bloody good look and soon.

Just watched the highlights. Two soft pens but consistent decision making. Jack well off his line but he didn't need too for Dunk's pen because he would still have saved it had he not.

Ok perhaps it hasn’t ended perfectly but he’ll be remembered well by me as part of a historic team for us (though sadly I will miss both AFC games this season and won’t be able to give him a clap). I personally don’t think several years of decent service should be forgotten, falling outs happen in football. Who knows maybe Smith himself has had a few along the way, think it’s a jump to say on the basis of a month his attitude is ahead of Bugiel’s. Hopefully he’ll continue in the current vein though, no complaints from me. Yes he looks an upgrade from a playing point of view and gives us a clear goal threat.

I should also mention how impressive Harry Beautyman has been as, last season, I did wonder (on here) if he was likely to get back to the level of skill that he'd demonstrated in earlier seasons. Well, I should have had more faith. He looks like a new man. By which, confusingly, I mean the old Harry.

Totally agree. The old Harry is back and injury free.

Yes agreed Harry Beautyman had a brilliant game. I was worrying about him towards the end of last season.
Regarding the referee it was noticeable how he was the total opposite of Saturdays. The County ref was card happy and last night's didn't caution anybody. I wouldn't have blamed him if he had shown the yellow card a couple of times.

I think some (me included) may have overlooked the fact that last season Harry had a bit of a bad time with injuries and played through some of the issues. Good to see he has that spring in his step again. With Clay already looking quite settled and N'Guessan having potential, our central midfield looks quite solid.

Thought Clay had a good game Tuesday night in the middle of the park snapping into tackles he struck up a good partnership with Harry B. Surprised N’Guessan hasn’t even made the bench in the two games though I did see him on Saturday (must have just missed out on the match day squad).
