Best name I’ve seen linked so far by a very significant margin. Except the Cowleys who I’d venture might be more unrealistic but guess never rule anything out!

I should express, as I haven't yet done so, enormous gratitude to Matt for all of the magnificant things that he's done for this club, and all the best in what I sure will be a successful future. As with many others, I could see nothing but a good, new, squad at the start of this season. What went wrong I do not know.
I also completely understand why a large number of commenters on here tried so hard to hold the line for him during the struggles that we've had. I think this change is completely the right thing to do. It has to be tried. But it's always good to see such loyalty.

I think it's safe to assume that the new manager's primary brief will be to keep the club in League Two. But the club will also want a manager who buys into its ethos and will be committed over the longer term.
If the Board can find someone who ticks both those boxes, that would be ideal. Otherwise, we could be looking at a short-term appointment, an experienced manager with a track record of hauling clubs out of trouble, who may now be semi-retired but who'd relish the challenge of keeping our club up.

I would anticipate a short term appointment to the end of the season with a significant bonus (written into the contract) if we stay up.

I can't claim ownership of this one but I thought too good to waste on a private WhatsApp "I see we squeezed onto the BBC web page....must be a quiet day in Wrexham!?" Also, in said BBC article apparently we lost to Rotherham on penalties?! Excellent! Perhaps the ricochet off Bouzanis's shoulder past 3 defenders on line didn't happen either ?!

For what it’s worth, in the last 25 years virtually nobody “linked” with our managerial vacancies was ever actually discussed in the boardroom.

For what it’s worth, in the last 25 years virtually nobody “linked” with our managerial vacancies was ever actually discussed in the boardroom. And when you look at the suggestions in the betting, you can see that most of them don't understand Sutton. For those eager to get "a Sutton man" in however, if you look at our most successful managers (i.e. ones that won titles), only one of our former players did that (John Rains). The remainder either had no previous connection to the club (Sid Caan, Paul Doswell), or had been promoted from a internal coaching position, again having never played for us (Barrie Williams and Matt Gray). One could argue that Keith Blunt won a big trophy for us, but he also oversaw our first ever relegation. Other managers who were ex players including Ted Powell, Dario Gradi, Alan Gane, Larry Pritchard and Ian Hazel either didn't have time to deliver much or didn't really deliver. So certainly I don't think that a criteria should be "have an already established connection with the club". The priority would be the best candidate to save us from relegation that we can afford. Which for me would rule out a LOT on the list of those linked.

Mark Bonnar please. All wrapped up and ready to open at Christmas Would that be the Mark Bonner who was sacked by Cambridge in November (3 months after signing a new “long term” contract) with his team in imminent danger of relegation? Clearly a better option than Matt who has been sacked with his team in imminent danger of relegation. 🙄 Bonner did a very good job at Cambridge United but ran out of steam much like Matt Gray. The big obstacle to him joining Sutton is in your post. He was three months into a new long term contract. That leaves a considerable sum of money owed to him by the club. I'd have thought the salary Sutton could offer him would not compensate for that he'd lose by taking a new job.

I think that would depend on the conditions of the pay out he got from Cambridge when he was sacked. I doubt that would include losing said income if he became a manager elsewhere. It wasn't a mutual termination, it was a sacking.

Why would Bonner be such a good choice?? Did a great job at Cambridge, taking over with them in trouble (like us) at the bottom of L2. Pretty much instant impact and got them up. Kept them in L1 for 2 seasons. Pretty much done what Matt Gray did for Sutton but without the long spiral downwards, they were still out of relegation zone when he was sacked (though arguably heading that way). Not sure what the expectations are at Cambridge but from an outside perspective he was way over achieving there.

He kept them up on the last day of the season mostly due to results going his way and beating FGR who had been relegated for weeks prior to the game. He also took them last season from 7th after 10 games, to 23rd 17 games later. I'd say there really was a long spiral downwards, but got a bit of fortune at the death. For large chunks of the season they only were not bottom because FGR were so rubbish.

Just a thought, could we tempt Sam Allardice to come too the club on a short contract to keep us up, because with this sacking a statement has been made that we want to badly stay up. So wonder if he would be tempted.⚽️⚽️⚽️
