So 73 days on from our last game and fateful relegation from the FL we find ourselves back in action tonight against old Conference South opposition in Tonbridge Angels as we officially kick off our pre-season campaign.
A busy busy summer at the club with so many comings and goings it’s going to take a little bit of time to get accustomed with all of our signings - I’m looking forward to seeing them in action though and how they gel together as a team.
Think we last visited Tonbridge during pre-season in Matt Gray’s first full season with us, they have Jay Saunders at the helm these days who we remember from Maidstone of course.
Many of our contingent going tonight?

Encouraging start
Many Sutton fans in the crowd?

I'd say around 20. Standing behind the goal in the second half that is. There were some sitting in the stand to the right.
It was an encouraging performance. Tonbridge didn't really do anythingto be honest. The Sutton number 7 looked very lively indeed.
Very well taken goals all round.

A few more than 20 behind the goal. Gate was announced as 282 I think. All four wide players did well, some good pace on view and some well taken goals

Overall it was a really positive start. This team feels totally different and had both energy and purpose. We made a mid table side from the division below look really poor, unlike the opening game last season where a weak team from 2 divisions below (and ended up being relegated) almost matched us. Our 2nd goal from Vaz was a thing of beauty, but there wasn't one new name on there who didn't impress me, and was interesting to see Coley shouting orders in the first half, almost captain like. I wonder who will be made captain of the side?

Back on the road again for another season watching Sutton.
From my enclave on the south coast it took 2.5 hours. Traffic and the weather and poxy 20mph zones, although Tunbridge Wells could get away with 5mph zones. Disgusted? You bet.
As for the weather, probably the first time I have experienced mist at 5pm on a July afternoon.
As for the match it was certainly a step up from last season's PSF's which, had me, quite accurately, believing our time in the EFL was not going to be elongated.
There was some great athleticism on show, a fair amount of skill and great energy. We looked particularly strong on the flanks with Boateng and Sivi (?) in the second half in particular quite dazzling at times.
Vaz looked very good and scored a great goal. Defence wasn't really tested so can't gauge much.
I still think we need an Easty type in the middle of the park but hope to be proved wrong on that front.
Not sure of the strength of Angels' though as they had a number of trialists although the bloke who missed the second half sitter maybe looking elsewhere for a game come the weekend.
282 in the ground. Glad I am not the only mad fool around on such a horrible evening, more like October than July.
2 hours to get home, not helped by missing one roundabout exit that added 20 minutes and a few miles to my journey with sat nav desperately trying to get me to head towards Sevenoaks and London and up what looked like farm tracks. Joy.
