In all the FA cup excitement, it's like we've forgotten we have a league game tomorrow.
Oldham, of course, were our first ever home Football League opponents. One of our "throw it away game", leading 1-0 up to 88 mins and then conspired to lose 2-1, and oddly enough all 3 goalscorers got yellow cards before scoring! The return fixture was a lot better and certainly Ricky Korboas best game in a Sutton shirt, grabbing a brace.
Oldham's away form is slightly better than their home form (more wins, fewer draw) so no doubt the first of a tough couple of fixtures for us, with 4th place Gateshead coming to visit us on Wednesday.
For the geeks in the fixture list, this double header reverse also happens in Feb (Oldham away on Sat with Gateshead the following Tues)

I noticed Oldham's travel information for their fans state they are not running a supporters coach and their notice states that while their tickets have been offered for the curva terrace they are not being housed there which suggests they will be on the parkside terrace, rather like away fans were before the Construction of the new TV gantry. Where that leaves the curva is open to question.

I have noticed a number of times that premier league fixtures are reversed at the same time as ours are 🤷. I am sure that fixture secretaries (of which there have been many associated with SUFC affiliated clubs over the years) would take pleasure in explaining how the algorithms work. 😀 OK , back to the more useful Oldham thread….

How do they work it out ? No idea !! But we do have to indicate which local “big” club we want to be paired with to avoid home fixture clashes. Also who we would be prefer at the holidays. None of this guarantees that preferences will be met.

According to posts on their forum Oldham have a few injuries. LINK

My first Sutton game this season. Looking forward to it, although I openly admit to preferring EFL games, it’s what I’ve always watched.

I feel that the next two games will constitute a significant test of whether we're serious promotion contenders.

What can you say about that, other than Oldham did not have to do too much to win that one. We have a young side that are now really finding out what this league is all about, if they did not all ready know. This is a project, not a splint, so think this season is about for me building a squad for next season and beyond, because Steve would be the first to say that this is not the finished article of a squad, so there’s no need to go over bored with the results. Yes the club do want to go up as we all know but it will take time, so just get behind the lads.⚽️⚽️⚽️

You very rarely get the opportunity to build for next season at this level. Your best players get picked off by bigger clubs or more money and you’re left with gaps. You can put a philosophy and style of sorts in place but it’s extremely difficult.
One thing is clear we currently aren’t good enough to compete (or beat) with the better sides in this division. Defensively we can’t keep the ball out of the net and there hasn’t really been any consistent signs of progress. We are 0 wins in 7 against sides above us. Success for me this season is staying out of the mess at the bottom.

Am I right that their three goals were all uncontested headers from uncontested crosses?

Yes really poor performance. Oldham deserved winners, aside from the goal we created virtually nothing in the second half. As has been said this season looks all about finishing mid table at best. On today's showing Birmingham will embarrass us but strange things can happen.

Is it a manager capability thing or players or both? We’ve got this for another 18 months. One shot on target, losing the game and we bring on a striker with 2 minutes of normal time to go.
Let’s make as much money as we can against Birmingham as we won’t be going any further in the competition.

Firstly why did French and Kirk switch positions.I have no confidence whatsoever in French as a centre back but he can do a job at right back. Secondly why is Arnold still our no 1 keeper after the number of howlers he has made this season.
Oldham were a solid no nonsense team who could have scored 7 ! i dread to think what Birmingham will do to us in two weeks.

We desperately need one if not three experienced leaders in the team and perhaps one to lead from the touchline. I was told by a team physio that Ransom is not yet ready for selection.
