Well done Staines. Don't think anyone would argue that it wasn't deserved over the season. Can't believe how close it was to going the other way though... *gulp*

Well done to Carshalton - sounds like they gave Staines a far better game than we did!! Oh so close.
Oh and congrats to Staines. Well deserved without a doubt and I don't think anyone in the league would disagree!

Perhaps we softened 'em up for them on Tuesday, LOL.
TBH, I didn't expect it to be that close. Robins didn't look great in either the games we played against them and Staines were outstanding against us in both games at their place. Still, cup finals, which this in effect was, are often like that.
What a gutter for Robins to miss a pen so late in the game - I know that I'd be sick for a month if it had been us.
I expect them to be challenging strongly next season - amazing how the arrival of a new face can turn a club's fortunes around in a year.
So, Robins, K's, T&M & us all in the RLP next season. The first time all 4 sides have been in the same division since 85/6. Should be interesting.

Frakey, you are the voice of reason here. Hard to say that Staines didnt deserve it over the season (I am not a fan of the playoff system) but it was very, very close. As you say with a few local derbies next season should be interesting. How will the Xmas/Easter fixtures go? I expect us to be away at Bognor if the RL are true to form.

I listened to the commentary and in the end I did actually feel sorry for the Bobbins, unlike us they were always a danger on the break even when penned back in that second half. Why they did not give the pen to Ide or Jolly I will never know, its that decision which is why we are still in the same league tonight. Its strange how you never really troubled us in either game yet managed to cause Staines all sorts of problems? I just could not imagine what life would be like if you were in a league above us, suicide was an option at one point Seriously you did very well indeed and deserve a bit of credit even from us but the right team won in the end.

Although both defeated, Sutton and Carshalton are still winners in the London Borough of Sutton! We've both had fantastic seasons, more interest from local residents and have been a great advert as to why your local non-league team is better than supporting Man Utd or Chelsea!
Well done both teams on good seasons and unlucky to Carshalton today!

(I'm one of those who regularly checks this forum but rarely posts.. ) Frankly I would have hated it if Bobbins had gone up today when we didn't manage it, but that's a very tough way to have gone out of the playoffs. Ouch ! So, all credit to Carshalton for taking a team of Staines' calibre so close and look forward to playing you next season. Should be a good one

Some of the Sutton faithful spent their Saturday lounging about on Brighton beach, taking in the sun, eating ice cream and watching fat men fall in the sea before realising we were next to a Brentwood town fan (!), we sat blissfully free of knowing if our fall from grace last season would put us below the bobbins so soon after. There was however a most pleasant wave of relief as the occasional score check yielded first a missed penalty (since when did Kadi take pens?) and then a final score of 1-0 to Staines that meant our quiet confidence (the confidence that meant we weren't glued to Radio Wey in desperation like some U's!) that Staines would prevail was justified but only just. Now, if we can find some away form next year we won't have to worry about the chances of this happening ever again...

It would have been more than a bit harsh if Staines had been beaten by Carshalton (14 points behind them) or Sutton (15) in fact it's totally unfair that teams have to be involved in a play off after finishing so far in front of their opponents.

Sorry Billy, there ain't nought unfair about it. Every club goes into a season knowing what the rules of promotion are. Yep, the play-offs are a lottery but they kept the season alive until the last day of the season for a few clubs even though the title had ben won long ago by Dover.
Staines were duly promoted but if they hadn't been it wouldn't have been unfair just football.

You have to draw the line somewhere but it's been drawn in the wrong place. The top two should go up plus one other. Is this the way it works in all the non league divisions ? If Carshalton (or Sutton) had gone up by beating Staines in a one off after being outclassed over 42 games it would have been farcical.Would it have been decided on penalties if it had stayed 0 - 0 ? If so even more ludicrous.
Because "it's the rules" doesn't make it right.Change the rules.

Billy the same argument could be made for third using your reasoning, surely your suggestion only works if you scrap playoffs completely.
Also that would mean 9 teams down from 2 divisions which is a difficult split.
