I know what you're saying is right Nick but i can't help thinking that it would have been a gross injustice if Staines hadn't made it.

Not a massive fan of play-offs myself, for the reasons mentioned, but at least the Ryman system does give home advantage to the higher placed team, unlike the Football League, where the neutral venue means there is absolutely no advantage to the higher placed team at all.

Let's not forget the reason that play-offs were introduced, namely to give more clubs an interest in promotion as the season progresses. That increases competition and attendances, which is good for the game overall.
If there had been no play-offs in the Ryman Premier this season then Dover and Staines would have virtually sewn up the two promotion places by Christmas, leaving ourselves, Bobbins, Tonbridge and others with nothing to play for during the second half of the season.

I have to admit I'm a fan of the play offs. What would our season have been like in April without it? In other sports you can finish top of the league and then lose in the play offs which is even more silly. Although the Ryman is a little bit of an odd league, I do think they've got the play off bits right, and yes the right team went up.

I think the Ryman playoffs are actually spot on as said they gave us an interest right to the wire but where they are better then other leagues is that all games are a one off. There are no 2 legged semi's meaning the higher you finish the more chance of being at home which is not true of the Connie Sth upwards. Hayes&Yeading really benefited from the 2 legged semi which saw them finishing lower than Eastleigh losing to them and still getting another bite at the cherry, now that is unfair.

Though i like the idea i feel sorry for East Thurrock this year, top going into the final game against second, only needing a point, 3-2 down with 5 to go and they get a penalty, miss it and go into the play offs in a terrible frame of mind and get beaten by 5th who finished something like 20 points behind them.

PC, you left out the fact that the missed pen was saved by a full back after the 'keeper was sent off for conceeding the spot kick! Now that IS a sickner!
Unlucky for the Bobbins, but agree the better side got their reward for thei record over the 42 league games. As for their pen, I was advised by a Bobbin yesterday that it wasn't a pen in the first place and the reason Kadi took it was Jolly didn't want to know!

Bit of a bottlejob by Jolly? I'm sure if he missed it the fans wouldn't of minded as much considering he got them where they are now and if he scored it, he would now be in 'legendary' status down at Coldsore!

As for their pen, I was advised by a Bobbin yesterday that it wasn't a pen in the first place and the reason Kadi took it was Jolly didn't want to know! Well, that's a point of view..I wasn't far away, and although he wasn't about to score, he was pushed. It was actually quite brave of the ref as he was unsighted and waved play on until his lino flagged it. That said I wouldn't particularly have wanted us to win it like that. I doubt any of us begrudge it to Staines afetr their consecutive runners-up spots. Not sure about the Jolly story- but he's not the world's greatest peno taker either- the one he missed v Harrow a five year old would have stopped! Just a pity we weren't playing you lot- we would have shredded you on that performance ;D

Oh and another thing- Phil Wilson [what a nice guy he is too!] had a great game, as did Bash. A couple of excellent pics of PW in action in Andy's photo set.

Here's a quote from the NLP report:
Richard Jolly, the free-scoring frontman and usual spot kick king, had an attack of nerves and handed the ball instead to sub Junior Kadi. Staines keeper Louis Wells was equal to it...

To be fair Rob, my witness used the word 'dodgy' in reference to the pen and I drew my own conclusions. As for Phil. Top bloke. Had his critics here, but kept us in far & away more games than he ever cost us.
