An interesting debate.
The difference between now and '66 is that the attitude and lifestyles of today's vastly overpaid and egotistical Premiership players have nothing in common with the man on the street. Not so forty years ago.
Involvement with local communities is what it's all about; that's why we connect so much with SUFC; we are an intrinsic part of it.
So; promotion promotion promotion every time.

Those Bentley-driving, schoolgirl-spitroasting, fan-ignoring, mansion-dwelling, champagne-guzzling to55ers mean nothing to me.

Amazing that it has got to the stage where England is almost certainly the only country in the world where a notable majority of match going football fans don't care about the national team.
On the other hand, i would swap Wales simply at the bloody World Cup for a Sutton promotion but this is almost certainly fuelled by the fact i've just worked out how much money i've spent going to Cardiff for games with only a 3-1 win against Cyprus amongst the bitter and depressing defeats ;D

I can see it now, arise Sir John Terry, imagine the wags then? The streets will be awash with England fans most of whom find trouble speaking coherent sentences. They will be rioting with each other and p*ssing up against Nelson's column.
Honestly it does not bear thinking about?

England, no question. World Cup is every four years, whereas Sutton can have a stab at promotion every year.
Though, like OS above, I would be a bit concerned about some of the morons who only watch football to use it as an excuse to get pissed and cause trouble up town. It was bad enough after just a group and knockout stage victory at the last world cup...

Sorry Mr Frake but I believe you will quickly find out at the World Cup that England are not particularly good. As soon as we play a Brazil or a Spain we will be out of the World Cup, and that's even if we get that far. Compare our passing, control and skill levels to the top sides (both club and country) and we are sadly lacking in comparison. We struggle sometimes to move it quickly and accurately along our back four!! Time will prove who is right.

But hasn't that always been the case? Read my post & you will note that I stated who would be the likely winners.
My point was you reckon we are terrible. Terrible doesn't qualify with just one defeat in qualifying and anihilating (twice) a team who were considered to be more technically gifted than England.
Of the teams above England in the FIFA rankings, we came from behind in Holland to draw 2-2 afte giving them both goals and have beaten Germany in Germany. Argentina struggled to qualify and Italy didn't look great against the RoI whose approach is little different to England.
Also we will not have to worry about the heat in Sth Africa (just altitude).
England are not the real deal yet & injuries to key players would bugger us up, that's for sure but we certainly ain't terrible.

It has to be England. I was 6 months old when we won it and don't remember it funnily enough. We have a real chance this time if we are injury free and hopefully the big 4 will get knocked out of the Champs league early doors. Aren't FIFA a nice lot deliberately keeping France and Portugal apart. Come on ROI.
Brazil aren't as good as they were but of course will be a threat but I see the main threats coming from Europe - Spain, Holland, Germany and Italy. England can beat any of these teams and I would expect them to do so.
As for the morons that support England every club has them including Sutton (when we have the big games although I doubt they really support us), it's just in larger doses supporting the national team.
I cannot believe that English people do not want us to win the World Cup. Shame on you.

I think that's changing the original thread topic which was would you swap promotion for a World Cup win. I personally said no, but that does not mean to say I will not be supporting England in the World Cup because I will. But my club comes first, I do that week in week out and feel every goal for and against I do not do that with England. When Sam or Sonny etc scores that goal which gets us promoted next April/May that feeling cannot be surpassed by anything Crouch or Rooney do in the World cup, while I am sitting in my chair.
I don't think England will win the world cup but they have a chance, but I too see the likes of Spain, Holland and Brazil just too strong for us.
