It has to be England. I was 6 months old when we won it and don't remember it funnily enough. We have a real chance this time if we are injury free and hopefully the big 4 will get knocked out of the Champs league early doors. Aren't FIFA a nice lot deliberately keeping France and Portugal apart. Come on ROI. Brazil aren't as good as they were but of course will be a threat but I see the main threats coming from Europe - Spain, Holland, Germany and Italy. England can beat any of these teams and I would expect them to do so. As for the morons that support England every club has them including Sutton (when we have the big games although I doubt they really support us), it's just in larger doses supporting the national team. I cannot believe that English people do not want us to win the World Cup. Shame on you[/b].Thank goodness someone said it.I went to two group games in 1966 and the bloke sitting with me at Sutton last Saturday (a schoolmate) went to the final. I don't follow it in anything resembling the way i used to,for all sorts of reasons, some mentioned in here, but to pick a promotion for Sutton (average attendance 500 odd) over a World Cup win for England is downright ignorant.

For me it would be Sutton winning promotion. Call me an old timer if you wish but England winning the World Cup would be nice, but somewhat tainted as it is a foreign manager.

Good grief! Amazing that it has got to the stage where England is almost certainly the only country in the world where a notable majority of match going football fans don't care about the national team. Interesting comment. "Almost certainly" on what evidence? Although interest does seem to have waned in recent years, I disagree that a majority of match-going football fans don't care about the national team - firstly, we on this board are a very small sample of the above (although I'm sure you're speaking on more general terms), and secondly, the question was "would you prefer..." not "do you give a stuff about about..." Most English match-going fans I know are pretty passionate about England, including myself. I cannot believe that English people do not want us to win the World Cup. Shame on you. I don't follow it in anything resembling the way i used to,for all sorts of reasons, some mentioned in here, but to pick a promotion for Sutton (average attendance 500 odd) over a World Cup win for England is downright ignorant. I find these posts baffling. I care very much about England winning, and if we won the World Cup, I would be thrilled to the core and happy for the rest of the summer. But my heart truly lies with Sutton. And the point is, preferring Sutton winning does not mean I don't care about England winning or "do not want England to win the World Cup." Where on earth did you get that from, JR? England and Sutton are not mutually exclusive, you know. It's not even as if they could ever play each other! Imagine! Ignorant? I would be more willing to slap that term onto someone who, when an innocent "what would you prefer" question is asked, slags off people's choices just because they're not the same as his. And what does our average attendance have to do with it? If it's ignorance not to prefer something just because a majority of people does, then excuse me, I'm off to watch the X Factor and I won't be drinking real ale any more because most women don't. Oh, and let me know if you all decide to dive off a cliff, won't you? I couldn't miss that party. I'm not having a pop, Billy, JR, but how can people's feelings/loyalty/love be ignorance or something to be ashamed of? It's not as if we were asked "would you prefer a pay rise or a worldwide end to war, genocide and famine?" is it? Anyway, I shall lighten up a bit. You'll have deduced that my answer to the original question is firmly in the Sutton camp. I love my country, but the bit I love most is the bit where I was born and grew up - Sutton. I haven't ever been to an England match although I've desperately wanted to for years, but I know full well that when I do, although I might get caught up in the emotion, patriotism and togetherness of it all, it's not the same as really feeling that you belong, the intimacy of a group of people you know and love and who love and respect you (OK, maybe we're not all that soppy, but this is just my feelings). This is precisely how I feel at Sutton. Sutton United is far more of a family to me than my own family has ever been. I have made literally hundreds of friends and acquaintances here, including several of my very closest friends. I haven't missed a home match since 1997 nor an away one since 2004. If England won the World Cup, that would be amazing, but being champions of the World for four years - what do you do with that? "Nah nah nah nah nah, we're the best team in the world!" Big deal (no offence meant to those of you to whom it means a lot more than that; your opinions are perfectly valid, but this is how I feel personally). Winning the league, now - that opens up a whole new world of its own. New grounds, new people, and above all new opportunities. New chances to succeed and, most importantly, to raise the bar of our own ambitions as a club. Now that's what I call success. I love my country as I said but I could never describe how much I love my club, and how excited I would be to see it grow, move upwards and succeed. Is this shameful, is this ignorance, after everything Sutton United FC has done for me over the last fourteen years?

Without wanting to blow smoke up your arse Sal, thats possibly one of the best posts I've ever seen on here. And one thing that a more casual supporter misses - the football is the No1 thing at Sutton, but Sutton brings people together - I know of about 20 people at very least who I wouldn't be mates with if it wasn't for Sutton, and to me they all enrich my life. Added to that is we follow Sutton totally by choice - there's no obligation whatsoever, although with the England team there is a less of a choice as such - Unless you are Rax, you generally don't follow a country that isn't your birth or your nationality/heritage. I've been to a couple of England games, and yes its been exciting, to be part of it, but I felt more of a neutral. I don't think anyone on this board follows England more than Sutton (in terms of going to games etc), and there is pride when it happens. I was following Greece in 2004 (as part of being the "Motherland" and the winning was amazing - I was in Toronto at the time, and there is a large greek community. So after the game we went to "Greektown" there and celebrated with other Greeks. Part of the best thing is sharing success with others you have something in common with. And that works on an international level as well as a Sutton one. Personally of course I'd pick a Cyprus Eurovision win above England winning the world cup

I always watch England games if I can (unless Sutton/5-a-side clash) and of course I want us to win. My obsession with the Faroe's came from former goalkeeper Jens Knudsen who infamously wore a bobble hat. I think it's the tin-potness of the Faroe's that ultimately meant I kept up to date with their national side and league. In a way the Faroe's and Sutton are kind of linked. Both aren't 'fashionable' but they mean a rather odd amount to me.
If England played the Faroe Islands I'd of course want England to win as it's my country of birth but I'd be routing for 2-1 score line or something like that.

Very well said Sallycat. An articulate and moving post from a passionate Sutton United (and football) fan.

I cannot believe that English people do not want us to win the World Cup. Shame on you. Didn't say I didn't want us to win the WC. Just that promotion meant more to me. Mainly as I want the f*ck out of the Ryman League. Like yesterday.

Also not every Sutton fan is English or an England supporter.
